The part that fell to bits is one of the side cases on the intake manifold between carb and engine. Ive repaired the other hole with chemical metal as it just melted more when I tried to mig weld it. The fuel pipe union (Y shaped part) is gradually coming to bits and will be fitted on the engine but not used as I only need one fuel line and this has four lines into it two from each tank and a fuel pressure take off hole it would be a pain to pipe in for just one tank. Have you Had any luck with cylinders yet and how many do you need? May have found 2030 new ones:p but cannot promise yet…..

mmmm Bad problem has come to light today while gently blasting the carburettor mounting the side plates decided to turn to to daz So I need to manufacture two new ones out of solid aluminium. should be interesting due to the amount of holes to be drilled. The parts that are already restored are wrapped up in bubble wrap and cling film and put away in the airing cupboard until needed! My little helper has gone awol as well but im getting there slowly and its one big learning curve

Why do people with surplus plane and engine parts always want so much money for them? Ive just had a chap on that auction site with a starter tell me to get lost and not to politely because I offered him a sum that I thought was fair for it and its been relisted about 5 times. I know it is specialist but how many people want an ex raf starter motor I just cannot understand it. Any way thats my moan over. The cheetah is singing along all the induction pipes and push rod tubes are blasted primed and painted The next plan of attack is the cylinders they need honing then a light sand blast and either powder coated or a coat of heat proof paint. Then I will be back on with the crankcase. Does any one have a crank nut for a mark 9 surplus to requirements and the oil sheild that goes behind it??????

The numbers are engine and overhaul numbers the engine is possibly from an early anson or an airspeed oxford as my buried engine was. I have a prop hub for your engine if needed and would swap it for parts for my mark nine. How did you get your front timing cover off as mine wont budge and ive bent a puller doing it.

I am going to use automotive plugs as the genuine screened ones are to expensive for my budget and on that auction site they are silly money. could you load a close up picture of the splines on your crank ? it looks as though yours is a mark 9 they were nearly identical apart from the crank…..

mine is a mark X. think it woud fit?i emailed the seller to see if he will ship it.there are a lot of mark 9 parts on my engine.the engine mount, ignition ring all said it. is there any way to research were my engine came from? I think it was from a wreck/ground flip over by the damage.any were I can search the stamping as to what it was on?or maybe get a accident report.

Have you got your prop hub? if so you need to measure the o/d of the splines that the front clamp bracket sits on and the centre of the prop.My problem is i have a mk 8 hub and a mk 9 prop the mk 8 hub will not fit my engine either so im stuffed at present until a mk 9 hub comes along! hope this is of some help it one hell of a learning curve doing a radial i should have stuck to haflingers!!!

I found my prop word of mouth there were three there that the chap had had since the war but i think retro aviation may have bought the other two the one on ebay is less money than i paid for mine but it depends what mark engine yours is as if its a mark 8 the hub will not fit through a mark nine prop and a mark 8 prop is sloppy on a mark nine hub if you get my gist!

Thanks for that I cant wait to get fuzzy headed in the smell of castrol R and exhaust fumes:D:D:D:D. I see the other cheetah that is being restored on here Has a nice big workshop to live in and most of the parts were not buried in the ground in 1946 (as with mine) and im doing mine in a 10-6 wooden garden shed with very limited space and limited toolerey.

My cheetah is wizzing along merrily should be up and running by the end of this year then a merlin or a (napier lion if the chap will parts with it) to do and the abc engine out of a sunderland its quite exciting My little helper is fantastic he cleans I paint and we both assemble even with one hand it is possible. Ive decided to have my wooden prop cut and balanced as it seems that there are hundreds of people out there with brand new june 1940 dated mark nine cheetah props so it wont seem so sacriledge as they are that common.
