Thanks tony I actually bought one of these they are very informative. Not a lot happening with cheetah at the moment due to a few problems but I hope to be back on with it soon. Also another project is on its way all will be revealed soon. One clue is catalina flying boat:eek:
Has anybody got any spares for a mark 9 cheetah as fitted to ansons that are up for grabs as as you have probably seen I am rebuilding a cheetah for ground running and am short of one or three bits. With all these ansons about in restored or unrestored conition there must be a massive pile of n/o/s spares some where or any second hand flying time expired parts would be ok any help to get my engine back to running order would be very greatly appreciated I can pm a list 0f parts to anyone that may be able to help;)
The timing gear cover is giving me a headache at the moment it will only move a little so im having to make a puller again as the last time The puller I had bent. Thankyou or the info mclittle it seems as there is not a great deal of difference between the 9 and 10.
Ive decided to have my wooden prop cut down and balanced as the aluminum props or club props seem to be as rare as chocolate firegrates. Me and my little helper have now put the engine nose down to start the assembly of the supercharcher and induction end of things but we have come across a very large snag. The baffle plate/rear main bearing carrier is touching the crank when its placed on and has a 6mm gap all the way round between the two faces. Has anyone got a crank nut for the propellor end of the crank as mine is missing and I think this could be the problem as the crank needs to be pulled through the engine away from the rear main.Any assistance from ex cheetah mechanics or anyone that has rebuilt a mark 9 cheetah would be great.
wanted a test prop for my mark 9 cheetah possible trade with my brand new old stock wooden two bladed prop!
I reckon your right there im just going to paint the very badly corroded bits after blasting and leave the crankcase in its original paint. The cylinders are going to be a heat proof matt black as are the push rod tubes. The rest of it can stay original. Im looking for an aluminium propellor for it as I do not want to cut my wooden one up as its too nice. More pictures later this week its amazing what you can do with three hands:D
Here are some more pictures of the restoration sorry they are not that good. they show the cylinders before restoration a before and after push rod tube. The induction housing and the nearly finished supercharger vane just a bit more elbow grease required.you can see my restored magneto drives and the starter motor mounting casting on the induction casing. Also the crankcase ready for a hot wash to get rid of that horrible inhibitor grease that its coated with. Next question to paint crankcase or not to paint????
How is your restoration coming on?
After my slight hiccup and having a keen pair of hands helping the restoration has taken a step closer. yesterday evening for the first time in possibly 65 years the magneto drives and their drive shaft were turned by hand all new bearings have been fitted. The induction housing has been sand blasted so its looks very nice. I will post some pictures later today. Its a great acheivement and has helped me a lot to actually get these parts back together as they are the bits off of the buried engine that I stripped. The super charger has also been stripped and sand blasted and my helper has polished it so thats looking good and ready to generate some wind.Ive also at long last got the engine off of its frame and it is led nose down on its trailer so I can start to rebuild the induction/main bearing end of things. My friendly fabricator has my rusty ring (engine mounting) and is repairing it ready for mounting the engine to the trailer. so things have progresed over the last few days:):):):):)
Yipeeeeeee Ive got a lad helping me with my cheetah :):):):) The restoration is under way again so I will start adding to the original thread later. Its great cheered me up no end he,s interested in engines and is a friends son :):):):):)
Hi there try and find sombody that does soda blasting that is very gentle then get it polished and it will look fantastic. I have an aluminum world war one model plane that my great grandfather made and it languished in our shed for years I had that soda blasted then spent an evening polishing it and it looks really good I then laquered it with some auto body laquer to keep the shine. Its still as good now as it was 10 years ago when i did it.:D
There is no one interested in engines or helping in my village and it breaks my heart not being able to work on her and I cannot see a way out of it at the moment even if I do moth ball her. This decision has been a hard one to make but hopefully some one will take her on and love her the same as I do. Thankyou for the kind comments. If anything does change Ie some one willing to give me a hand locally I will let you all know. The accident was just over a year ago and my hand has got steadily worse over that time even with physio etc.
My lovely cheetah engine is sadly for sale due to my hand injury getting worse and stopping me working on her If anybody is interested please pm me I am open to sensible offers and the buyer gets the prop and manual and the trailer i bought to modify for it as well.
When I look at the state of some of my parts I reckon they should be chucked in the rubbish but its all I have to get on with so restoration and repair is the main option and it seems mark 9 cheetah spares are quite hard to find a lot of my bits came off the crashed mark 8 that I bought so its a mix match but at least it will be another runner saved from the crushers jaws.
