i actually think its not too late for the Vulcan, its probably high time that the Beeb got its hands in its very deep pockets and funded a ‘Red Radome appeal’ lenny Henry, Guy Martin, a specially commissioned Goodnight sweetheart special, where Gary inadvertently goes back in time to the height of the cold war and there is XH558 in her hangar at Finningley being prepared to do the role she was designed for. ok, she will be in the wrong colour scheme, unless they could run to applying a special spray on/wash off scheme? . a special behind the scenes with some of the countries leading warbird folk. lunch with john Romain or Martin Shaw, a day with the ‘Reds’, once in a lifetime trip in a lanc, all of this with bids from joe public. a true 3 hour special on BBC1 Friday night, watch the money flow in. i still feel that despite all the hard work that has gone on , unless you’re a real aviation nut then no one really knows what s going on, it wont be until the photos of Britain’s last flying Vulcan being cut up are on the front of the red tops that most folk will know the plight. educate people. put it in front of their noses, gives ‘er’ indoors a reason to tune in on a Friday night and suddenly people will take notice.then suddenly theres some proper money on the table to build something for her future.

    last hop!

Was wondering the same thing.. maybe fly her out top Elvington

well good luck on this one! ,I mean i’m only a used car salesman, but when I mentioned that 558 should go somewhere so she could be ‘live’ with other examples of the V force I was hammered down by the know alls and apparent specialists on here. VTTS were always on a downward slide once the bomber was grounded. it was obvious from the outset that putting what is now just a museum piece in the middle of a commercial airport wasn’t going to last.so I agree, get it up once more. take it to Brunty, (if they’ll have it) to be honest I would say NO now, we weren’t good enough 18 months ago so stick it! , but that’s just me, The Canberra was a pipe dream, beautiful aeroplane but would never attract a crowd like the Vulcan nor the interest. a bit like comparing a Yak11 to a spitfire, both beautiful aircraft but which would pull a crowd or an individual to travel 200 miles to see it? The swift needs a good home too. no shortage of takers there I bet? easily transportable, a manageable project for even the most cash starved organisation. how much time and cash needs throwing at 558 NOW?, to get it up one more time for a final flight into a place where it has a future as a taxiable aircraft, not one that will be pushed out into the weeds once the money runs dry and the staff go off and find new projects to pay their mortgages.

    Single Pin

And one other thing, that Single Pioneer looks much better in that camo scheme than the one it wears now at Hendon!

This was due to the re-cladding of the bottom two hangars. and it really was a treat to see the airframes outside, but the real plus was those hangars were a lot warmer afterwards, I discarded my fingerless mitts after that!

Well maybe but instead of posting a load of wishful thinking why don’t you rebut the rationally argued objections from us “Thomases” here? And then you would deserve a better hearing. How about half a dozen bullet points for your plan to put her back in the air, knocking down the main objections already made here.

Horses for courses old chap. I sell cars and houses. I leave the finer points to those who enjoy it, but it shouldn’t stop me putting my point forward should it? As for rational, how many people thought it rational that the Vulcan would fly again when it was first grounded? I bet those self same doubters spouted on then about the CAA and CofA s and out of hours this and that? as I say Never say Never!

One day, you doubters and scoffers will eat your words! Someone with the get up and go and the funds will make these machines fly once more. with the attitudes of many folk on this forum I am amazed we ever came out of our caves and starting working the land, forging new paths and moving on toward a developed and advanced society. in fact i’m quite amazed many of you have computers or electricity in your homes!, One day a shuttle will fly again to mark the centenary of re-useable spacecraft , The Queen Mary will plough across the ocean carrying specially chosen winners and three lancasters in formation with a Shackleton will salute the monarch over Buckingham palace. watch this space! is everyone’s surname THOMAS on here?

It does seem a shame that after all the time and effort that went into XH558 that she is grounded because no one wants to take the risk? shouldn’t we just Boldly Go!?. I don’t want Olympus engines dropping into my back garden or wings fluttering down on orphanages, but if she’s solid and the engines running well then why not? the support was certainly in place and the money kept coming in despite the often threatened ‘Were Doomed’!! statements. if this was the United states she’d be in maintenance now ready for the season ahead. Come on guys lets do this!

I seem to remember the ex BA VC-10’s being ferried from Abingdon to I think Filton for the Tanker conversions. Gear & Flaps down one off transit I think & they appeared to be in a fairly shabby external condition, was it new engines installed etc. for the transit? Wellsbourne to Bruntingthorpe 25mins? As pointed out 30yrs outside for the Vulcan would merit a strip down of all airworthiness related components, anybody out there elaborate on the work carried out on the VC-10’s?

That’s it!!! I knew i’d read it somewhere! thank you Taff!
