i stumbled upon the ‘Human centipede’ the other night, i managed about ten minutes viewing, who thinks of this stuff? I struggled to sleep!
Thankyou chaps,
pretty much what i thought, but nice to have someones elses thoughts and knowledge, I was of course aware that Lincolns didnt have C/R props but knew that the basic wing was similar to the early Shacks. And as you say the Tudor didnt enjoy a long production run as i gather Roy Dobson ordered scrapping the whole remaining production run after the death of Roy Chadwick in a Tudor at Woodford. Quite a shame really i always thought it a very elegant aeroplane Though the Tudor 6 always looked a tad long in the fuselage dept! and rather nose heavy. Also whilst on the subject, did the later Avro 748 share any fuselage similarities in cross section/dimension to the Tudor as in general arrangement you can certainly see a likeness?.
Seeing that Halifax nose sat there, lets be honest, fairly uselessly! leads me to thinking that when YAM were building their fantastic Halifax representation why didnt IWM say something like:- ‘ Hey, youre doing a pretty good job there, would this genuine Halifax nose be of any use to you’ i mean yeh sure its pretty nice having a Halifax nose sitting in your collection but wouldnt it be better if it were joined up with the rest of an airframe? This is where i feel your national collections let themselves down, i sort of touched on this in a separate thread some weeks ago concerning hidden artefacts in various collections around the country which are all very well being preserved or at least stabilized but are surely better utilized if given an airing to the public once in a while? and this just re-inforces my views that we should all talk the same language when it comes to re-creating whole airframes and adapt a positive attitude in relation to releasing parts and assemblies to assist other projects.sorry, ive rambled havent i?
Thats great news Rich, And such good news that youll be staying put!, keep up the good work.Ill try and pop by over the christmas break and see for my self what a great job youre doing, I’ll show you my Mk2 tattoo, dont worry its on my ankle! A very drunken 40th Birthday bash im afraid!
Its a shame that shes not having the love thrown at her that the Shack clearly is, you will always get some ‘greening’ on the north side of any airframe left out in the elements i can well remember the belfast at Cosford looking almost camouflaged after a dark winter, but this can be reduced by the occasional wash off with a soapy broom. Lets hope someone takes it upon themselves to do that in the new year before it gets a firm hold! Just as a thought, is there much in the way of cherry pickers/scaffold towers left around at Coventry with the Airbase boys doing a flit?
i truly love the cat, but i can help thinking some framing on that cupola would make a world of difference, even vinyl strips would make it look a tad more the part!
No its a Hurrifire!
Im watching this round the father in laws tonight, can anyone let me have the answers so i can be smug?
Which just goes to re-inforce my views that the old girl should retire to Brunty or Elvington at least that way she can continue to stretch her lungs from time to time as well as her her legs i suppose? and of course just as british rail sometimes encounter the wrong kind of leaves on the line she may encounter the wrong kind of wind and get herself airborne fom time to time just like her Handley Page cousin!:diablo:
Sea vixen
Gannet
DC-6
Canberra
Not fussy in which order though!
Ok, ill ask again, any idea of an operating base? or is it too early to say?
Actually, thinking about it, do we know where they plan to operate the DC-6 from?
This is good news indeed! If theres any chance of getting that six flying it needs to be done!
I think were losing the line a little here, Firstly i agree that if we have a ‘type in storage which holds little or no history with this country then why hang on to it? the Harpoon/Ventura at RAFM is a tad different as it does as a type hold a place within the RAFs history, but if we held for instance a F104 then why would we keep it? we should then surely try and trade it for a type that does have a place in our museums.i suppose we could then ask why certain exhibits , again using cosford as an example contain types that whilst as a type have RAF History are displayed in another countries colours, Catalina and Neptune spring to mind? Its where you draw the line i guess?. Whilst i gabble on i question why the RAF museum chose to hang such a unique aeroplane as is their Dakota fitted out with a one off VIP interior and now hanging from the ceiling of the Cold War Collection when surely it would have been wiser to swap this with the ‘bare shell’ Dak that is now at Shawbury and displayed alongside their Horsa reproduction, furthermore the Cosford Dak even sported a D-Day colour scheme which though not representative of its VIP background would have fitted in with its location and afforded the Curious Public a better way of viewing and experiencing this unique interior which it will never be able to do hanging lifelessly from the ceiling as it does now.
yep, your correct Ant, you have definately waffled on! I think that what were trying to say here is that its time these collections be they small or national collections take it upon themselves to try and take some of these artifacts which the general public dont get to see and let them have a ‘looksee’ occasionally, i suppose we could even take a leaf out of the VTTS book and leave the odd begging bowl lying around that might help these forgotten and out of mind artefacts take on their once shiny pieces of national pride status once more!
