    Hidden Gems

i was actually toying with the idea of writing a book with the above title, showing just what is out there in our museums both large and small . Also by bringing these hidden relics out and into the open , we can judge by the public’s response what is worth prioritizing and what can go back in the dark for a further period of time. Most museums have a healthy number of volunteers on hand, and this could be a great way of utilizing those willing though sometimes unskilled(in aviation terms)hands and give them a very valuable and rewarding role to play in bringing these dull and bird s–t covered artefacts back into the public gaze.

    MUSEUM STORAGE

My only gripe on this matter is where museums hold vast quantities of artefacts and the public, who to be fair have paid for most of this stuff in the past anyway through their tax codes are not allowed access from one year to the next, ok if we take the storage hangars at Cosford which are not in the ideal location for public access and due to ‘elf n safety’ wouldnt be deemed acceptable for the public anyway , at least what is stowed away in their should be well photographed and put on a display board somewhere so the public can see whats hidden away. The Harpoon, the valetta, the twin pin(ok that has been displayed for many a year in fairness) and the many wind tunnel models and large chunks of Barnes Wallis researach work all kept literally in the dark and not being seen by anyone its all too ‘keep it up your jumper’ and ‘we know something you dont know’ for my liking.Lets get it all out, wash it off and get some pics taken, even rotate some of these exhibits in an ‘as is’ state, i have no objection to seeing the lovely ‘Lorelei’ wingless but at least on display for 6 months so we can all see her, it must be nigh on a quarter of a century since she was last afforded some daylight?

    Cosford treasures

Lorelei is tucked away in one of the lamella hangars on the other side of the airfield. I would doubt she’ll be seeing the light of day for some time, last time i looked her wings were riddled with corosion and showed signs of someone driving a stacker truck or similar into them.I did write a letter to the then Curator about trying to aquaire the wings off the Viking that was Burnt out by vandals at NEAM, but i doubt if anything was done.

what?? 3 years? i stand corrected. either way its not really a way of illustrating to your council, your public and perhaps even more importantly to your work force including your volunteers that youre in it for the long haul, i know that this is costing the owners a fortune and that it would probably have been easier to sell it all off, but i still feel that Coventry hasnt been given a fair crack of the whip. Anyway ill shut up cos ive spouted enough on this subject already.

    Vulcan ‘the future’

Its absolutely no use planning to retire XH558 to St mawgan, It can only be a matter of a few years at best before they ‘upsticks’ and move again, after all they gave Coventry two years to establish its self and then moved south to try things there, where next , Lossiemouth?.

    SHACKLETON TO FLY?

Well i guess as someone putit on this very forum recently, ‘a Shackleton is nearly a Lancaster but not quite’. And i can see what he meant by that, so whilst theres still a lanc flying and the very remote possibility of Just Jane getting some air under her wings again then getting the necessary funding together is gonna be a hard uphill struggle. The very fact that shes sat outdoors all these years will mean deep scrutiny of the airframe regards corrosion just as it would with Just Jane after all those years on the gate. Its a great idea and i would put money in just as i have with the Vulcan. but sadly the reality is that without a huge pile of money and some kind of initial push as the HLF did with the Vulcan it aint gonna happen. I think the better chance of a flying Shack might be to liase with our south african cousins and see what can be done there. The climate for one is a lot more airframe friendly and i would imagine that 1722? (Or is that the one which came down in the desert?)has more airframe life, i am guessing on this! . In the meantime dont deny all us enthusiasts the sight and sound of a shack at full chat, keep her live and look at securing some sort of roof over her head, what are they going to do with the hangars currently at Coventry? can one of these be acquired? I would imagine its only time before the council look at plans to absorb the Nimrod, Shack ,DC-6 Diner and whatever else they leave behind and merge it into the Midland air museum, after all what does it take to ease the fencing out a little? This may seem simplistic but i think it makes great sense and will at least tidy the loose ends up.

Hummmmm! like the dont bring Victors and Vulcans and Vc10s into Cosford, and yet the runway is certainly no shorter than it was in the seventies when they landed those same aircraft at regular intervals! I am aware that the Runway at Dx is shorter, but is that since the LHF grant?

OOOOhhhhh Errrrrr! well im sorry i spoke, it was just an idea, But correct me if im wrong, was’nt it supposed to go to Duxford anyway at the end of its display life? And i only mentioned Brunty as that was where it spent the mostpart of its Post operational life. And The Waltons did a pretty good job of keeping a roof over her head then without shaking the can in the face of everyone within a Hangars width of the vulcan. As for fairytales take it from me im firmly in touch with reality and when i do fear i may be straying i take a look at my mortgage balance and instantly regain gravitas!

    The VTTS Moneypit!!

Its not about the salaries, I agree that Dr Ps wage is probably the going rate, and i dare say with his credentials he could be earning a very great deal more. What is starting to grate beyond the man in the streets usual pain threshold is the constant shaking of the tin.If it were outside sainsburys they would have been asked to move on by now. How about The old girl Goes down to Brunty Or Duxford, shes kept dry, warm and in another twenty years time when a whole new generation havent heard that tremendous howl from the engines we take another look at things then, lets face it by then Rolls Royce will have been taken over by Tata so they will then hold the design auth on the engines and would love some publicity for their latest offering with the leaping cat on the bonnet.so hey presto the engine problem goes away and were all much better off anyway , In the post Johnson parliament that we will then be living in!
