Well with effectively two flight capable B29s over the pond, whats the chances of one of those coming over?, Its time we had a bit of heavy metal from the ww2 era over our heads, i fondly remember Diamond lils visit.
Bring her over here, fly her on airshows, no problem. People will come / pay to see this.
But I can also imagine seeing a Lanc flying over the Möhnedamm would be quite frightning for some of the older generation … don´t know what memories that could bring up.
well if it was in this country we’d all be off to the local ”where theres blame theres a claim” outlet and filing for Post traumatic stress disorder!
Personally i think its all B**ls anyway, how far do you take these things? the luftwaffe performed at RIAT in a Tornado the other day, The japanese turned up in their new P1, which was beautiful by the way!, if were not gonna let bye gones be bygones then we shouldnt let Lufthansa land at heathrow should we? what was it, ”alls fair in love and war? ”. we shouldnt pretend that it didnt happen, any more than we should try and stir things up, it happened, many countries lost lives as will continue to happen in this politically /religion fuelled world that we live in. if we took a British bomber to Germany it would merely be a salute to the lives of people who were lost. Its not rubbing their face in it.if were going to take things this far then are we going to stop repeating the Battle of Britain, The Dambusters and 633 squadron every bank holiday? I think not!
It is precisely this kind of thing that makes my blood boil, who in their right mind would send items like this for scrap? they are not scrap items of metal, they are national treasures! how these things can be allowed to happen is totally beyond me and the volunteer who called in the scrapman would seriously benefit from a public flogging! , i take it these items were at least offered to the national collections before being disposed of? having said all of the above i suppose the RAF museum didnt actually fall over themselves to recover the remains of the Halton freight pannier left rotting in a Shropshire breakers yard for thirty years did they? so we only have ourselves to blame. selfishly i am just thinking what a fantastic conversation piece a glaliator exhaust ring would be over the mantelpiece!
i also think the little white blade aerial some six feet or so back from the astrodome is definately a post war mod for radio comms, as i dont recall that being on wartime lancs?
Is the Ambassador still outdoors at Duxford?? if so that seems like an awful waste of time and effort to me?
I think one word sums it all up fairly concisely;- GREED! , when you take on an airframe you take on its current state, its history, and most importantly its future. I have every respect for Mr Colletts past investments in aeroplanes which otherwise would have ended up on the scrapheap, but his recent actions with taking on airframes and then walking away when something which looks on the face of it as more attractive, but then goes terribly pear shaped leaves me with little respect for the man and his ever changing names of set up. as shakespeare said ”all that glisters is not gold. ” perhaps now they will concentrate on what they have at coventry. to put it another way, i can comfortably afford to buy a racehorse, i cannot however afford to train, house and race it! so i leave it to those who can !
So, that said she is the last surviving AEW in the uk, as i believe the St Mawgan example is a mock up AEW?, either way shes deserving of a warm dry future. shes made it this far, we cant put her out in the cold now can we? i truly hope a home is secured where she is, she is a ‘Manc’ after all! a bit like scary spice but better looking!
But it didnt start life as an AEW2 did it?
I can remember when it was at Cosford, discreetly tucked in between the hangars, i grabbed a few minutes aboard and took in the delightful smells and feel of a just out of service airframe, and i dont mean the elsan either!, I did hope then that it might find its way into the hangar and reside alongside the lincoln, and if memeory serves me correct it was destined to replace the Lincoln in the hangar and the Lincoln was going north instead, but the resident ghost put paid to that!
They are a National Collection with processes and protocols for disposals. What makes you think that anything will be ‘simply dumped’?
A Vulcan B1, a Victor, a Beverley…..shall i go on?
Shackleton ommission
In fact, most of the aircraft are owned by the RAF Museum IIRC, with some notable exceptions.
Well if there was an aircraft that is missing from the cold war museum then the Shackleton is definiately IT!, therefore if this Shack is up for grabs then some serious head scratching needs to be done at Cosford and a small re-think on the exhibits that lay within the worlds most oddly shaped Hangar! boot the large yankee chopper out, remove the cafe, shop and twin Pin to a different position and ”shoehorn” the Shack in ! i can remember seeing the early drawings along with a rather splendid model of the planned building and exhibits back in the early nineties and im almost positive it had a shackleton in that layout. failing that, what would it enatil to ”stitch an extension onto the building over on the belfast end and allow the shack and some other missing airframes to have some warm shelter?
best film moments
OOOPS!! I forgot Strategic Air command with jimmy stewart, there are some delightful flying sequences in that too!
AIRLINE….. YORKSHIRE TELEVISION SERIES,
Episode 2, Ruskins first flight fter rebuild of ”vera” The look on jack ruskins face as he struggles with an out of trim Dak,Priceless! and damned good acting on the part of Roy marsden, apparently he was taught the rudimentary principles of flying a Dak to make the shots more realistic.
A Brigand, that’s whats needed!
