Its nice to get the opinions of the aviation archaeologists on our forum,i find the level headed approach of finding the missing crews so they can receive a correct burial commendable .The question we all need to ask our selves is if that was our father, son, ect, would we find it comforting that they were back with their families and not in the machines that killed them. One question if i may what happens when the digs uncover Luftwaffe’s crew, are remains shipped home or interred in this country.

But by placing crashed air frames in a museum we all get to see them not the lucky few who have trudged across fell and dale to get there it would also stop plundering. But the question remains what about the air crew who’s remains from such sights were never removed.I read some were that a person dug up a fighter pilot who’s body would have been too difficult to retrieve during the war, this person removed certain items of clothing and personal affects, this i found distressing .NO RESPECT.

MR horowitz, its a delight to read your posts and i for one and probably not alone on this forum find it fascinating to read about your experiences, probably still strong memories even though its been many years.I had the great fortune to meet a B17 tail gunner years ago when he and his lady wife had run out of fuel on the M62,during the all too short trip to the petrol station and back i found out they were attending a commemorative Reunion.I followed their car to the service area i was working at and got them both a coffee.I sat with frank and darla for over an hour (much to the annoyance of my bosses)hay customer services and all>He recanted only small memories of his time over here. But it wasn’t until i had seen them both safely on their way that i realised what this man had gone through and seen.I got a thank you letter from frank on his return home, and would receive regular post cards from them via work until ten years ago when they suddenly stopped.
so keep posting we are all ears.
    dave 🙂

it is sad that there seems to be no memorial to this crew there, and that the ‘grave robber’ is allowed to remove parts of the aircraft without getting prosecuted, wouldn’t it be better the remains of the wellington should be removed and placed in a museum rather than leave them to the vultures!!!, if this is done i will help with this venture if i can, i have a four wheel drive that could be used if need be., also what would it take to have a memorial there?, would it need to go through the RAF and local authority?.

    Greg

An emotive subject i thought about submitting a thread about this very topic. Is it “grave robbing”if the crews remains have been removed, how can you stop people removing bits of air frame. Why no memorials to lost crew(you get one if john lennon took a leak on a wall some where). My jury’s still out on this one.

There was to time at mildenhall(sadly missed)late eighties i think, when a free fall display team landed off target, directly in the car park, some lovely size nines in a few escort bonnets about five jumpers muttering and carrying kit through hundreds of cars.

While a friend worked at marham in the early nineties two mig29s arrived for the show and the pilots duly demanded ten grand to display. How much that was actually delivered was unclear ,they then demanded fuel to which the RAF said you want fuel you pay for it. CHECKMATE!!!!!

MILDENHALL in the 80s,stood with dad on the static line, when the f104starfighters started their display ,to which someone behind us shouted look there widow makers ,a usaf in joke not appreciated by the crew of the two 104s stood by their aircaft directly in-front of us.

The time at humberside airport mid way through the show they announced that a aircraft in trouble would be landing so if every one would look to thier left they would see it coming in,to which two jaguars did what jags do best ,came in fast and low from the right I’ve never seen ten thousand or more people all jump in unison.
