I’m all for recognising the efforts that some people have done for this country, but I dont agree with renaming airports like the USA seems to do. First of all, its bloody confusing, and unless you know that George Best comes from Belfast, you’ll never know where George Best International is! Thirdly, where will it all end? Secondly, just when you get used to a name, the ******s then change it again…..
Robin Hood International (not a lot to do with Robin Hood), London-Lydd International (nowhere near London – a HUGE 51nm away in fact), Liverpool-John Lennon International (Why not Cilla Black, or Jimmy Tarbuck, or Ken Dodd, Derek Hatton or any one of a 1000 squeaky scousers who are/were popular)…….
Anyone any more wacky suggestions? How about Lands End/St Just/Pirates of Penzance International for starters? Or Stapleford/London(Chav) International….
And is it true that Halfpenny Green was changed to Wolverhampton Business Airport because the owner was a West Bromwich Albion fan and wanted WBA as the NDB ident?
Watch out for happenings at brunty in August 2006, 558 will see sunlight again….
I think he meant that it would either be pushed out of the hangar, or the hangar doors opened. As I’ve said before, I will publically eat my own head if it flies in August 2006 😮
Dreamers, the whole lot of em. About as much chance of flying in August as Concorde is of doing air displays.
PS, I read in the Times today that a certain Tory MP wants Concorde as the new Royal Aeroplane…………
Whilst I understand the need for adequate head protection, I think Paul Stone looks a bit out of place wearing a modern flying Helmet in a WW2 Hurricane…….An American Flying helmet at that!!!
Ok, without wishing to enter into yet another “Will it be at Legends” debacle, anyone notice that Steve Hinton is getting a Boeing P-26 peashooter airworthy in the States. Now, not wishing to put 2 and 2 together, but what are the chances of it appearing at Legends? 😀
Oh ******! I’ve mentioned the words. I’ll have to go and beat myself with a wet newspaper…. 😮
Oh ****** again, I’ve just noticed that ****** and ******** are words this forum don’t allow. What a pile of ****:D
I think the Turb team were also there in 1996. Great show, got a warning from the then CAA display inspector for low flying! 😮
Great quote from Red Barchetta, Growler
Still remember my first airshow – Biggin Hill 1972. Been known to frequent a few displays these days as well 😀
‘Twas Brendan O’Brien and Celia Kench, who both presented ‘Flightline’ for satellite TV. Despite Brendan’s over enthusiasm and dodgy fashions, he sure is a good pair of hands in the cockpit of most things…..ooo er Mrs! 😀
And yes, he was the original truck top landing pilot in a Super Cub (1980s), before Dave Evans & Martin Carrington did it in the late 1990s 😎
I think one of the films was ‘Full Metal Jacket’, most of which was shot at the disused Beckton gas Works in London.
If Doug’s relatives are as secretive as he was, I wish you luck!
PS. His son lives in Monaco (or did)
Svetlana Kapanina(Biggin 1998, exceptional pilot,total babe!)
Agreed, but with incredibly hairy legs! 😮
I despair sometimes at the gullability of some people. Maybe this is a good time to bring up the
Nah. I’ll get me coat………………..
PS. Who is paying Dr Robert’s Salary? Or is he giving his expert project management skills free of charge?
PPS. Is it the same Dr Robert who was in the 1980s band, The Blow Monkeys?
My point exactly!
Why, oh why does TVOC still give out ‘optimistic’ press releases, only to then threaten to sell it to the States if a sponsor can’t be found? Surely a company with a project manager of Dr Plemings calibre should have foreseen just how much money it would take to get it airworthy again? And just which commercial sponsor would take on such a huge money pit such as XH558, only to find that Airshow Organisers wil not pay much for any large jet, even a Vulcan!?
And throughout this, innocent people have been giving hard earned cash to ‘keep a Vulcan in the air’ Shades of the ‘Keep Concorde Flying’ mob me thinks..
Sell it to the States, and at least we may see it fly again……I fear if it stays here, it will only leave Brunty in several groundborne crates 🙁
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Can someone confirm that it was a 7-seater when operated by Southend Corporation? I don’t think I dreamt it!
Indeed it was, and I think the picture posted by Albert Ross is actually at Southend (railway, houses etc)
