ARCOs Beech 18 is owned by Tim Darrah, and merely kept at Duxford…Sometimes also at White Waltham.

Anthony Hodgson’s ‘Southern Comfort’ was sold to a guy in Ireland, and Anthony Hutton’s is now based at Exeter with Andy Foan (in SEAC colours)

I think the Beech 18 is a superb aeroplane, shame that there’s no other airworthy examples in the UK. It flies like it looks – fantastic!

G-FRCE recently returned to the air, and is marked up in its ex-military identity

Not so. G-FRCE is painted all over blue with gold accents, and is in civvie markings. Me thinks you refer to G-RORI which is in an RAF training scheme.

14/09/05 . G-ADGT, Engine failure after take off at Oxford/Kidlington. Ground looped on landing. Heard from a mate, so may not be the whole story…

I’m curious. Maybe Skybolt might be in the best postion to answer this…..

If the A26 is ‘strictly prohibated’ from performing aerobatics how has this pilots display been approved by the CAA ?? Is the pilot just approved as a display pilot by the CAA and then the routine is upto him or has the actual routine in the aircraft been observed and then passed taking all available information into account ??

Leuchars was a Military display, at an RAF airfield, so the UK Civil Aviation Authority would have absolutely no say in what they allowed or not. Their rules are laid down in Joint Services Publication 550, and I believe that these rules require a participating civil pilot to hold a display authorisation of some description, but these rules can be (and are) modified subject to approval from a higher authority. The aircraft was foreign registered, so the aeroplane would at least have to have CAA permission to fly in the UK, and the pilot may have held a UK Display Authorisation. If so, he would not be permitted to aerobat the A-26 in the UK. And to answer your question, he would have had to be evaluated on type by an experienced evaluator, which has to be done every 13 months, to renew his Display Authorisation.

I maintain that even if a pilot holds a Display Authorisation, whether its a military or civilian show, and whether the aeroplane can do it or not, quite often it’s a very minor mistake, error or omission on the pilot’s part that leads to a major impact…..(scuse the pun….)

Thinking about it, I’m sure any aeroplane can be rolled and aerobatted. The Beech 18 is routinely aerobatted in the States, but I sure as hell wouldnt do it, even if the FM said I could (which I’m sure it doesnt). Its what happens when you screw up that manouevre that decides whether the aeroplane will hold up to it or not. The biggest killer in air displays is a barrel roll that has gone wrong, which is exactly the manouvre that virtually all aeroplanes can do within the limits of their approved G limits……….It ain’t clever to push the pilot’s or aeroplanes limits at an air display, because the ground is very hard….. 🙁

    Chris,

I walked over from the pilot’s tent to have a look at the Harvard, but was soon distracted by the three lovely ladies singing. Non-PC comment coming, but what fantastic legs….and I dont mean the Harvard!

I agree with Y11F, having myself seen the various original remains slowly turning back into a recognisable airframe, it cetainly gets my back up when ‘number crunchers’ start to question things….. Lets stop this before it gets out of hand and wait to see what the aircraft looks like once it’s completed.

And before anyone asks, NO it’s not going to be at Flying Legends 2006!

When the M11 was built in the mid 1970’s, Duxford was not as significant or popular as it is today. I suspect that if the same thing happened now, the motorway would either be in a tunnel, or re-routed but I suppose it all depends on who is in Government at the time.

Does anyone know what’s going to be at Legends in 2019? I heard a rumour that the Beaufighter might be airworthy by then?
