Just an American gobs h i t e seeking publicity. He was never much good as an actor, and he’s even worse at PR..
tw@t:D
2 mins is the required attendance time for Fire Appliances on a Licensed aerodrome, which Duxford is. I was there, saw all the incidents at close hand and thought in the circumstances, with aircraft all over the taxiways and on the manoeuvring area, the RFF guys did exactly what they were there to do. Remember the 2 minute requirement is for an incident ON airfield within the airfield boundary.
The P51 incident was OFF airfield and the fire crews did what they should have done and made their way to the crash location in the most expeditious way. Short of using a teleporting machine from Star Trek, they did what they could do in the circumstances, which considering they were relying on directions from an American pilot in another P51, was pretty good.
Easy to criticise when you don’t have to do it yourself or know zip about it…..
PS No connection to Duxford Fire team at all
There are just so many things I want to write, but biting my tongue will have to do lest I get banned..
Does anyone know how the Percival Q.6, last heard of at Seething, is progressing?
At the same blistering pace it has been for the last 30 years…. I saw it in September and the fuselage is ‘complete’, but not sure if the internals are fitted.
Other than that, no change
Carl Schofield still flies for the Fighter Collection.. Will HE be at legends 2012?
Pete Jarvis has retired from the display world and now appears on the Shoreham Flying Control Committee.
Both flew the Tiger Club Stampe Duo in the 70s and 80s
Martin Stoner & Dave Roome went off to fly Hawks with FRADU at Culdrose.
Andy Wyatt does (did) some occasional display flying for Vic Norman in the Breitling Stearman’s now and then.
G-APAM, Thruxton Jackaroo ‘Myth’ (converted back to Tiger Moth and still active 2011). Can anyone identify the badge on the nose?:
The aircraft was owned/flown by Sheila Scott at the time and I believe that this was her ’emblem’..
I cant see what the problem is.. CAA asks if you’re insured, you say yes. Simples… It’s a legal requirement to have 3rd party insurance, so whats the big deal?
UK Display pilots are only exempt from the 500ft rule at a private event which has an exemption from the 500ft rule, or at a public air display, when their own DA minima becomes the base height at an airfield site, or the height specified in the CAA Permission, normally 200ft over land, 100ft over sea.

Ah, i see. we can quote things…Actually I do know a bit about this subject, both the airfield and the aeroplane. which is why i clarified things in the first place to end the hysteria. I could say “don’t quote ICAO at me when I know more about it than you”, but I wouldn’t ever say that!
Actually, the CAA’s CAP168 applies to UK Licensed aerodromes, which is broadly ICAO Annex 14 rules with a few differences. I can’t be asked to cut and paste, but it’s CAP168, Chapter 3, Paragraph 5 which applies.. Duxford grass is a Code 2 runway, and you’ll see that it is only compulsory (90m) for Code 1 & 2 instrument runways which this isn’t.
It is recommended that there is at least 120 m for all Code 2 runways, so even if Duxford 24 grass had 120m of RESA, the Mustang still would have landed outside!! Don’t you think that if there were any shortcomings, the AAIB would have recommended it? They normally cant resist recommendations…..
I’m off out to fly my aeroplane now; you anoraks can argue amongst yerselfs…:D
PS. DC-3’s with 30 pax would be Commercial Air Transport and wouldn’t land on the grass!
So ‘Mr Angry of Tunbridge Wells’…….
…. if BAA had adopted the Duxford mentality and filled the area with obstacles and obstructions, then the fatality free outcome of that incident may have been quite different.
They did. Approach lights, ILS aerials, various concrete plinths etc etc…. The aircraft was severely damaged and several passengers had serious injuries..
As Cosmic says, the undershoot is not designed to be landed on…
…..easily and cheaply remedied.
Well, i’m not sure how much you think planing an airfield surface costs, but it will put the price of airshow tickets up i’m sure!! It’s not just a bit of gardening you know…..
Enough clarification from me. If, in your ideal world, you don’t like it, contact the IWM..
I think you’ll find that ‘the bump’ is way outside the required distances for smooth surfaces required by the CAA. As the threshold of the 24 grass runway is some 156 metres further West, technically there is no requirement to have it as smooth as the rest of the grass area. Well, smooth is a bit of an understatement, as the grass runway at Duxford is far from smooth! The undershoot area is not designed for landing aircraft outside of, in this instance, 60 metres from the end!
If you landed in the undershoot of the Tarmac 24 runway at Duxford, at the same distance, you’d have a few more problems with passing cars etc…
The pilot walked away, after an approach with not many options other than to put it down where he did!
And just to confirm, the Blenheim hit the embankment, some 300 metres East of the 24 Grass runway, and not ‘The Bump’
Dunbar,
I assume you’re involved, and I wish you all the very best with the project. I’m looking forward to the day when the CAA will allow experience rides for all those without Licenses, and I am confident that this will happen in the near future
My own experience is that once you’ve had a taste of R-R Merlin you’ll want some more….
