Hmm. “Russian Helicopters” states they will deliver a new naval helicopter to the VMF, under the 2011-2020 spending program. Delivery of the new ship-based helicopter is expected in 2017-2018. Aside from this, they will complete naval modification of two existing Kamov helicopters : Ka-226 and Ka-52. The naval modifications of these two will serve on new ships, including the Mistral, assuming that piece of floating **** is ever purchased.

so could we expect Ka-52 with advanced sonobuoy, MAD, multisensor, carrying switchblade n torpedo then ? 😮

Yes, because TNI-AU does not have AIM-7. I put the maverick as primary weapon for ground-surface attack, eventhough on the training due to the costs of Maverick mostly Hawk 209 used MK-52 bombs for ground attack. But with Maverick capabilities, they have capabilities to conduct sea-surface attack (although no objection for me to say that Exocet in Etandard more capable as ati-ship than mavericks).
    .

maverick is not primary weapon of 209…even words ‘primary weapon’ only exist in game. Weapon chosen based on requirement and circumstances.. AGM-65G is standard weapon of tni-au… period until it is expired….

even in some exercise TNI-AU always prefer F-16 for AGM-65 strike mission, such as sikatan daya etc.

I think it depends what the requirement will be. In the early 90’s, Indonesia begin to look for A-4 replacement. The candidates were F-16 (preferable by the Air Force), Hawk 200, and Super Etandard.

Super Etandard was offered by French even with possible under license manufacturing with Di/IAe, but loosing ground to Hawk 200 on the basis more economical engine, more advance avionics and sensors, and compatibility on servicing infrastructures with existing LIFT Hawk mk 53.

Although the radar of Hawk 200 capable for Air Defence with AIM-7, but in Indonesian services it’s being used more as surface attack (ground and sea) with maverick as primary weapons. The Hawk 200 being located in Pekanbaru AFB in Sumatra and Pontianak AFB in Borneo in which both directly facing strategic sea lanes (malaca and singapore straits for Pekanbaru and south china sea for Pontianak). This show that Hawk 200 primary duties in Indonesian services is to conduct sea lanes patrol.

They are doing alright, however due to the their size they are not able to cover intented teritorial sea lanes effctively. Still they show quite powerfull punch for their size.

Thus with good ground attack capabilities and reasonable second line Air Defence capabilities, I think it’s comparable and even more capable than Super Etandard. It’s just due their size, they are limited for long range patrol duties, in which for Indonesia is the requirements.

However seems the Indonesian Air Force still satisfied with Hawk 200 (or at least content with). THe plan is to get MLU for existing Hawk 200 inventories together with Hawk 100 (in which being used as Recce duties), although no new fighters intended.

    on the contrary,
most of the time the TNI-AU Hawk 209s doing air patrol with AIM-9P4….

Pulse jet engine will be created in Russia

According to Lenta.ru, research and development center named after Lulka, the branch of NPO Saturn, is working on development of pulse jet engine. It has been declared by managing director of Saturn, Ilya Fedorov. The development is conducted in parallel with next generation engine project (Item 129) for T-50 (PAK FA) fighter. According to Fedorov, Saturn is working on “next-generation aircraft”, which will possibly be unmanned.

However, Fedorov has not specified the type of developed pulse jet engine. Three types of pulse jet engines are known at the moment: valvular, valveless and explosion. These power plants have the following principle of operation: fuel and oxidant are periodically supplied to the combustion chamber, where the ignition of blended fuel takes place and jet thrust is generated by outflow of combustion gases from the nozzle.

Pulse jet engine was invented at the end of 19th century by Swedish engineer Martin Viberg. New power plant was being used during the Second World War on V-1 missiles. These missiles have been equipped with Argus As-014 engine manufactured by Argus-Werken. The power plant was cheap and had an easy design, but it yielded to the existing engines.

Some of the world’s leading defense companies are carrying out research in the area of high-efficient pulse jet engines. In particular, the research is being carried out by SNECMA, General Electric and Pratt & Whitney.

what is advantage of pulse jet vis-a-vis conventional turbofan ? better fuel economy ? higher acceleration ?

This ‘seems’ that happen many times for China’s fighters jets when have to compete on ‘non tarditional’ market countries. For Indonesia I know for certain, that many Chinese defense products simply can not passed ‘technical’ assesment stages. So far only lighter and lower-tech products like man-pads SAM QW-3 and C-802 SSM that can able to passed those ‘technical’ assesment stages.

yes so far only QW3, Zu-23 copy and C802…china stuff in our arsenal
my nation found South Korea is better partner who are really willing give transfer of technology and have quality product at affordable price. we today use locally manufactured Korea designed/korea assisted LPD, Korea KIA jeep for marine, Korea’s KT-1 trainer, and soon korea IFV (planned) and involved in KFX project too….

It won’t be a bad idea.

Ka-226 has roughly the same size of OH-58 Kiowa and of UH72 Lakota, it could cover several kind of missions, from observation and scouting to general liason and so on, still being far less demanding than a Ka-27 derivative.

I doubt in turn that Kasakta could find its way to any meainingful role, it’s to light to take the missions perfromed by the Ka-27 and its derivatives, it could be a useful general purpose medium helicopter but I won’t add another type for such missions.

Actually only on small vessels like a corvette or a light frigate the slight smaller size and weight of the Kasatka could be a meaningful advantage, and being almost all russian ships already sized both as helipad and hangar for the Ka-27 family, I can not see any reason behind its induction in service with Russian Navy.

why not good ol’ Hip again ? especially Mi-14 Haze variants, amphibious and already navalized….
or even Mi-26… 😀 as Mistral have huge chopperdeck unlike udaloy….

Russian Navy to get fifth generation carrier fighter after 2020
    http://en.rian.ru/mlitary_news/20100928/160747881.html

The appearance of a fifth generation fighter in Russian naval aviation will not happen before 2020, the outgoing head of the air forces and air defense forces of the Russian Navy, Lt. General Valery Uvarov told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

Previously, representatives of the armed forces command and Defense Ministry had said a new naval fighter based on the Sukhoi T.50 design could enter service around 2016.

“It’s difficult to say when this aircraft will enter naval service. First it will go into service with the air force, and then be ‘navalised.’ To build a new aircraft from scratch costs huge money, it’s irrational and not competent. Conditions might be suitable by 2020,” he said.

Uvarov stressed, however, that any new naval fighter would enter service only following a competition in which other designs would participate, including from the MiG, Yakovlev and Sukhoi design bureaus.

weird….they say it is irrational to build new fighter from scratch… later they said the plane will compete with Yak n MiG design :rolleyes:

pay 1bn US$ development capital (~1% of our annual state budget), 20% share of work, purchase 50 aircraft.

we are junior partner I must say….
why not just buy T50 ? our national strategy are to build more thing by ourselves whenever we can…
it is a weird syndrom that come to every nation that under constant threat of embargo 😀
the same reason why Israeli, south africa etc developing their military industry

we also want something more advanced than T-50, something that can sufficiently play with Su-30MKM and F-15SG…. 😉

lets see how it turn… 🙂

    ======================
About Flanker why so many version is a political story, first version is purchased without consulation with financial department and legislative, PLUS at those time we are far from recovered from 97 crisis so we buy the cheapest flanker available, plain vanilla MK and SK . it still cause trouble with legislative though…later our airforce discontent with the vanilla one and want more and more advanced version so we purchase different version (SKM and MK2). Not sure why airforce want both single and dual fighter though…..

India is involved in two 5-gen projects, FGFA is with russia, he is talking about the AMCA project which is at a more preliminary level of development.
    http://livefist.blogspot.com/2010/06/stealth-in-indias-advanced-medium.html

I still think it would be a good idea for Korea, Indonesia and India to join forces on such a project.

it depend on Korea… but just look at how long india need to finish their project such as LCA and their Arjun tanks, and how fast Korea creating the T-50,, Korea would be very-very hesitated to cooperate with India. Both have too different pace of work when come to military stuff.
