U.S. offers Bulgaria 3 options for purchase of F-18 fighters
The U.S. government has proposed 3 options for the supply of F/A-18E/F Super Hornets to the Bulgarian armed forces, commander Andrew Hartigan from the U.S. navy said at Monday’s presentation of the Boeing-made fighter jet.
The briefing marked F-18’s official inclusion in the competition for the Bulgarian fighter jet contract which is part of an effort to modernise the army’s ageing materiel.
The proposal was sent by Washington last Thursday in response to a request for price and availability information received from Sofia in June 2005 for 16 F/A-18E/F Super Hornets.
In addition to the Super Hornets, the letter also requested price and availability information for 12 used F-5s, which are flown as training aircraft and are no longer in production.
Hartigan said the first supply option is tailored to the number and type of aircraft mentioned in the Bulgarian letter of request.
The second option envisages the supply of 12 used F-18s and as many used F-5s. The third option features no F-5s.
Commander Hartigan refused to reveal the price at which the fighter jets are being marketed to the Bulgarian side. According to unofficial information, the cost of a brand-new unarmed fighter jet is $53 mln.
Hartigan told Dnevnik he expected the negotiations to continue no more than 18 months. The U.S. offer envisages to have the supply contract signed in a year’s time with the first delivery seen in 2009. The navy official said no options for the financing of the fighter jet deal were presented at his meeting at the general staff of the Bulgarian army.
Lockheed Martin of the U.S. and Sweden’s Gripen have so far shown interest in supplying fighter jets to the Bulgarian army. Eurofighter, Rafael and Mirage are also expected to make a play for the contract.(Dnevnik)

Bulgaria renews helicopter upgrade talks with Elbit
“Defense News”: The move follows a court ruling on Elbit Systems’ petition after the tender it won was cancelled.
New NATO member Bulgaria has renewed negotiations with Elbit Systems (Nasdaq: ESLT; TASE: ESLT) on a deal for the upgrade of Russian Mi-17 and Mi-24 helicopters in service with the Bulgarian army, according to the European website of “Defense News”.
A Bulgarian government spokesman said in a statement that the Ministry of Defense of Bulgaria had returned to talks with Elbit following a ruling by a Bulgarian court on a petition by Elbit.
In March, the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense informed Elbit that its participation in the tender it won in December had been cancelled.
In the past, the upgrade project was estimated to be worth some $60 million, but Defense News cites market sources as estimating the value of the contract at about $70 million.

As for helo gunships, these are provided in a lot more efficient manner by the various US units there flying AH-64D’s or AH-1W’s.

Can anyone give me info and pictures of new iraqi aircrafts?
India is pretty much out of question, but I am missing a big potential customer for 50-60 F-16C Block 50s here and that country is Egypt. Next to Poland and Chile that is where Lockheed might score again.
Bulgaria and Romania, too. 😀
