PMC ma cowlings, baby!!
Sorry but taken in January ’14 … so this is the original T50-5 ??
@Roovialk again ! Any interest to discuss ot am I already on Your ignorer list ?
If you want to check out respected analysis on Chinese military affairs you would do good in looking at Dr. Andrew S. Erickson who specializes on the Chinese military. He is well respected in the world. Another person I hold in high regard is Peter Mathus of China Brief. He provides a structure deliberately designed to help you build a solid foundation for understanding the PLA and helping to develop a progressively more sophisticated perspective. These guys and others make a living watching China. They get paid for doing it. These sources will point you towards deeper understanding of what China is up to.
Yes, I also rate him high especially in his deeper understanding of the background, the internal structures … however he too is not always correct and – and You mention one very important point of concern – he is not really an independent researcher any more. Since he get paid for the things he concludes, he is dependent on the political “will” of those who finance his works.
As such always glad for a conversation and discussion …

Ok I’ll bite. Hold forth on the remarkable progress China has made with their carrier aviation program. The floor is yours. For it seems that China has virtually disappeared from the arena of carrier operations. All we have is this unicorn sighting of China building a super carrier at the Dalian shipyards. Did China somehow master years of air and deck operations in the short time the Liaoing was at sea? Is the student now the master?
@Roovialk !
Honestly I don’t understand You. Where did someone say all from China is super ? Where are the statements from any of us that they mastered carrier operations, high-end engine development or anything else ? Most of us post – surely with a certain kind of enthusiasm – but not a blinded hype. We know or think to know where the Chinese industry has their weak-points and – at least I have no problem to mention them – but also where it made progress.
But I simply have the feeling that in Your opinion there is only black and white ! Nothing in between … Something that does not fit Your opinion simply cannot be:
– when we post a new prototype of the J-20 it is immediately bashed as a failed design, underpowered and heavy weight. Strangely in several points I agree but since I don’t follow Your line completely I’m a China-lover ! But it is surely and undisputable a certain progress in comparison to older Chinese designs.
– when we post an image of a J-10B powered by an WS-10 or a J-16,m J-15 or J-11B + WS-10 it is immediately bashed as an old design, stolen and surely not reliable, since China simply cannot build engines … the contra-argument that several hundreds of that engine-type are in use since years is not even noticed (esp. from the starter of this tread). Again I do not rate the WS-10 a hyper-modern show-stopper, but it is not that failure some want to describe it.
– if there is a new missile, UAV, transport … all is stolen, old, dated, unreliable, … there is no progress for You, they are still behind – admitted in most likely several if not all important areas – but in Your opinion it is not even allowed to acknowledge that there is progress, that they catch up … and that they are maybe in certain areas even in front of other nations, who are building aircraft successfully for a much longer time.
As such it is simply annoying to be called a blind “China-lover”, who’s not willing to see Your truth if in return arguments were ignored, discussions were simply avoided, arguments were rarely baked by reliable sources and if nothing works, You are getting personally rude or at least provocative !
As such I really like to discuss if a discussion is permitted … but if You only want to be confirmed in Your opinion that China is bad, China is behind, China is stupid, CHina is corrupt, CHina steals … then either You are or it’s me, who is wrong here.
With China involved in a active campaign of confusion and obscuration of the state of its affairs internally who can say what is credible evidence? This goes double regarding Chinese military affairs. China needs to come off its obsession with paranoia and provide meaningful facts.
Yes, indeed that’s a problem for all interested in that matters but after some time You learn – if You want to – who’s reliable and who’s not …
But regarding who’s currently really needs to “come off its obsession with paranoia and provide meaningful facts” are certain circles within the US policy !
Anyway …
Deino
😀
Why? Is it because he presents a view that does not agree with your glowing opinions on China?
Maybe You really misunderstood my critics and even more I’m not the defender of the glorious opinion on China !
I only think it is a quite typical habit nowadays here to start simple flame-treads like “I know the F-22”, “PLAAF has a crises” … not that these treads are stupid itself, but if You push some arguments that are simply stupid and then ignore the contra-arguments then this might not be the stupid “China is super opinion” but the as stupid “China or all from China is bad” …
The problem is that this forum is no longer a location to discuss and became something where mostly youngsters can push hard on their opinion, an opinion that is rarely based on facts but of feeling, prejudice and even more the pure will to bash everything different to the own opinion.
But anyway if You think it’s me who’s wrong here … then I should better leave like so many serious poster in recent years.
Deino
PS: by the way so much on PLAAF-crises even if I have to admit that they still use the Russian AL-31FN.
Uppps … not posted yet !??
Reportedly over Hama today … and later reportedly on arrival at Bassel al-Assad IAP/Hmemmem AB
are you secretly hoping they buy chinese instead?
No, The ARJ-21 is simply no option, it’s a joke ! As such the SSj is indeed probably the best Iran could get.
Like I said I like some sort of diversity: Su-35 for China, YES, SSJ for Iran YES for sure … but I don’t like faking news only to hype something, that in the end is clearly BS ! (like that Varyag in Syria story)
Deino
Don’t raise your hopes on public statements. Every airplane maker has manufacturing constraints. And some will not sell to iran on time due to bigger customers in arabian
That’s indeed funny !
Who here in this forum raises all his hopes in regard to a possible Su-35 deal to China ONLY on public statements ???
Anyway You get me wrong: I’m not a member of the Airbus & Boeing-only family. I really wish the SSJ, the MS-21 and the C919 all the best (as well as Bombardier and Embraer) – and would even welcome a deal with the PLAAF for that formidable fighter (even if a few don’t think so I’m not really thin-skinned or hypersensitive, I’m only realistic) – but I wish especially the Russian media should take Your advice and keep on facts … instead of raising hopes based on public statements !
Deino
Yes … a denial !
Iran official denies Superjet deal with Russia
http://www.presstv.ir/Detail/2015/09/28/431058/iran-russia-aviation-superjet-cao-abedzadeh
Can anyone finally ban that idiot !??
By the way doesn’t play the “Nationalinterest” in the same league like “WantChinaTimes” ??
I have to say it on the record here, Deino, I respect you and you in-depth knowledge about China.. I really do.. But you’re slowly starting to lose it and your responses tend to become overprotective in nature, without any proven facts supporting it. The fact is that for general public, the J-11D stays a vanilla Flanker upgraded with latest systems because it is the easiest explanation, much simpler than an idea that it was somehow completely reworked structurally but no one can see that and no one has any data regd. this.. If new info / evidence about the J-11D being made of composites appears, then I will gladly change my mind. But somehow I can’t see what good would it serve spending so much effort reworking a 30-yr old design just to please few hard-core PLAAF maniacs..
A little bit of objective perspective would not hurt you, frankly speaking..
Thanks for Your kind words and You might be a bit correct … but why am I “overprotective” if there are indeed many reports that alone the J-11B has a much reduced weight in comparison to the standard Su-27SK/J-11A and given the fact that SAC now also produces the J-16 with the Su-30MKK’s tails containing fuel it is not that far off to assume that the D might incorporate a few more modifications too.
As such I might be indeed a bit overprotective … while a few others are too conservative in their assessment to think SAC still reproiduces a 20-old airframe without any changes.
The truth might be lay in the middle … as so often !
All the best,
Deino
Any news on the ATD-X-‘s maiden flight !?? … wasn’t it planned for August ?
The latest images I know are these ones …
Deino
Neither of that, actually. Structurally, the J-11D is … still a J-11.. which is still a basic Su-27. OTOH, the Su-27M was a thoroughly reworked Flanker (more range, more payload, better maneuvrability) while the Su-35S is what you get when you want to achieve the same, but already have TVC engines which negate the need for canards and enable you to save few hundred kgs. That means the J-11D is behind either Su-27M or Su-35S.
So much for the structure. Regd. the avionics, the situation is different. With alleged AESA {or PESA, who knows), wide-angle frameless HUD, loads of LCDs and all-digital computer suite, the J-11D leaves the old Su-27M behind and approaches the Su-35S. But {there is still a but}, it only flies in a single prototype thus far and it might take years to get it into service..
That would greatly depend on what weapons would be used. J-11D shall use indigenous ordnance which could evtl. be shared with JF-17 (at least some, that is..).. But as already said, the export of any J-11s is a big no… 🙂
Indeed interesting from where You have that knowledge that the J-11D is still a J-11 ad as such still a basic Su-27 !
Even the J-11B uses many different parts like composits in comparison to a vanilla Flanker and reportedly the J-11D has an even more modified airframe.
If this includes “more range, more payload, better manoeuvrability” … I don’t know, but I’m really surprised that again without knowing anything about the D-model other than two blurry images You come to such “facts” !
In the end however – like You also noted – China will never export any Flanker version to Pakistan, and esp. not the J-11D. As such the whole discussion is – typically like so many treads here – as useful as “What would Laos do if they get hand on a Klingon Bird of Prey ?!”
Deino
Ohhh YES, Russia is Supa !! Mega, Hypa, Besta, Bigga … we all know it now.
