What a great thread ! Thanks people ! Vampire was my uncle’s favourite aircraft. He flew with 14 Squadron.
BTW… I am looking for Vampire drawings to start a CAD project like my Spitfire one.
‘Shame to spoil a single seater.
Prospective shareholders should be aware that the rear cockpit weight limit is 200lbs.
Beagle Pup, Bulfinch, Basset and Bulldog.
The Y2K volunteers should still be proud of their major input in the restoration. When Y2K flies they can still look up and say “I did that!” .
The ongoing restoration is in good hands with VWC, in my view….. an organisation with a good record that also relies on volunteer support.
Surely, on return, RT traffic with the goodies isn’t going to interest the baddies anyway? Also, some PR flights were made to show the baddies they were being recce’d….. i.e. to deceive the baddies that we hadn’t broken their encryption.
I have always thought the Blackburn Buccaneer was a big ugly brute, and the Phantom nearly as ugly.
The 159 is good, but Hawk is a whole lot more. Don’t be too impressed by words like ‘Advanced’ (in ALCA). The Yak 130 is more equal to Hawk, but has 2 engines to make it so ! Alphajet was Hawk’s contemporary, and a good aircraft, but sold only half the Hawk numbers, and also uses 2 engines. The L159 is not really comparable to Hawk, in my view.
F-20 Tigershark. Perhaps even the F5-E too.
Mirage 2000 too.
F-16 XL ?
He..he.. he… and it’s not even 1st April !
Of course the pilot’s inspection SHOULD find such damage, and usually would, but any other airline personnel who know they have accidently caused damage to an aircraft and fails to report it would be deemed to be ‘criminally negligent’. This is not a term I have invented, but is unfortunately perhaps not explained to some ground staff. As a passenger I am sometimes a little alarmed at the rather casual regard some ground staff seem to have towards aircraft. I apologise to those ground staff who work properly and probably know what I mean, because I am not talking about them.
1. Spitfire – so obvious…. battle proven.
2. Hurricane – same reason
3. Harrier – Still the only operational VTOL jet
4. Concorde – pushed technology
5. BAe Hawk – I am afraid it’s significance is that it is the last UK designed fast jet, but a very good one. ‘Dunno if EAP would count here…. and how much of it went into Eurofighter.
Speedy,
It depends when you cycled by it.
The real MK959 was replaced with a GRP ‘MK959’ in November 1991.

You B****r! 🙂 Now I feel old…..(maybe I am!). It was 1988/9, I was living in Veldhoven and I used to cycle round to watch the F5s based at Welschap. I think there were a few F-16s too.
Beste Wensen voor de Nieuwjaar !
