However I do understand that personal feelings shouldn’t come into it, if a combat wing is holding back the economy and it really isn’t neccesary anyway. ”Actually much of our Fighter component of our airforce spent quite a bit of time overseas… whether it was pretending to be AShMs for Aussie Frigates or exercises around the Pacific region and sometimes even further away. There is more pride of course in serving your own country, but if they want to play with fighter planes then Britain and Oz both have much better aircraft than little old NZ could afford anyway.
“All I am saying is I hope the combat wing won’t be required, if by any chance somebody does attack New Zealand I would hope that Britain would be the first on the scene but I worry that we won’t get there in time.”
I don’t think that will happen. First of all we haven’t annoyed anyone in the region enough to warrant an attack. And second, the only countries in the world able to mount such a raid would be Britain and the US, the Russians and possibly France. Of course I mean get here in an invasion strength capacity. First of all of those countries… which do you think could be stopped by Sidewinder armed Skyhawks and maccis? Second which would even want to fight so far away from home against us… the British failed to defeat the Maori in combat 150 years ago… I doubt anyone would do any better today.
what about the Japanese launching missiles off fishing boats cos we dont like them murdering whales? 🙂 (i got kiwi blood ;))
Singapore’s looking for new aircraft. theyre looking at the F-15, Rafale and Eurofighter. they sold their Skyhawks for over a billion dollars last year and i just think perhaps the F-16 could be the right choice for them?
“Singapore expects to decide early next year on its choice of 20 new combat planes worth over one billion US dollars to replace its ageing fighter fleet, Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean said in remarks released here Friday.
“We expect a decision on this matter early next year,” Teo told reporters in France on Thursday as he wrapped up a visit there, according to excerpts of a press conference released by the government.
The island-state, which has one of Asia’s most modern air, land and naval forces, is shopping for 20 warplanes to replace its current fleet of A-4SU Skyhawk combat jets in a deal valued at over a billion dollars.
Last year, Singapore trimmed its list to three possible choices — the Typhoon by European consortium Eurofighter, France’s Rafale and Boeing’s F-15 Eagle.”

Not a lot of holes I can find with any real knowledge of what I am talking about but arn’t the Kiwi’s scrapping the Macchis as well? 🙂
RGR did not know that. selling to US? dont know either. some would probably goto Wanaka i would hope 🙂
if i can weigh in with my uneducated, stupid and ‘newbie’ statement 🙂
NZ is a small nation, of 4 million people. i was unhappy to see the Skyhawks scrapped but they were old and it needed to happen (note: ditto for Aus’s F-111’s).
to then spend millions (billion?) on getting some newer aircraft for nothing in particular…really would be a waste of money. the geographical location as mentioned before, is a good reason as well. but one solution which, me personally, thought was good (but im a raving lunatic).
have a joint Australia-New Zealand air force, mainly based in Australia. i don’t know the cost of this, but it would add strength to both nations. NZ’s pilots could train at home in the Macchi’s (or?) before being stationed in Australia (also one reserve squadron in say Auckland or Wellington).
although i could see some issues in if one country commits itself to a war, but the other doesnt. would you split up the air force? hmm thats a problem there..
anyway, moving on 🙂
NZ’s location may not be vital to have an air force, apart from Hercules and the little islands (Niue..).
but Australia is, in the S.E.A. region..and to have two nations combined together to carry out operations would be great. NZ has a long history of highley trained pilots (first ace of WW2, most aces per head of population..) and generally, the military (i believe rommel said something about that).
Australia is buying into the JSF to replace the F-111, but also, replace the F/A-18? to me thats ridiculous. now if we had also, say, the Gripen..thatd be one mighty force (for a nation as small as Australia i mean). If NZ pilots could make up a percentage of the Gripen pilots (it could be co made like the ANZAC class frigates) it would be cost effective for both nations, and effective in any form of operation.
hmm, i dont think i made any sense there..but hope i got accross what i was trying to point out..which mainly is…joint Aus-NZ air force mainly based in Australia for foreign conflicts, if either got involved. 🙂
ok, point out the holes…NOW!

Hey Taz (geg from CSim here) nice pics :). looking foward to flying this game, when/if i get it 😉

SF runs smoothly on my 1600AMD, Win98, geforce 4 64meg rig…
dont know about the walmart version myself (you havnt corrupted us that much :p ) but the recent ‘service pack 2’ has cut down a lot of the buginess of the original boxed game, and the first patch.
plus the game has been designed so it can be easily modified.
just some piccies..(resized and quality cut down a bit due to hosting limits 🙁 )
