I stumbled onto this wee paragraph in the Auckland Star. I guess it must have been roundly ignored at the time, thankfully:
Auckland Star, Volume LXVIII, Issue 114, 15 May 1937, Page 13
BRITAIN DROPS “AERO.”
BOWS TO AMERICAN “AIR.”
H. E. Wimperis, president of the society, who believes the American form is a better term and is destined for universal use, will speak of “airplanes,” not “aeroplanes,” in his presidential address.
Britain has certainly not dropped the word ‘aeroplane’ and if Mr Wimperis believes it should be dropped, perhaps the Royal Aeronautical Society should start looking for his replacement, before he decides to drop the word ‘Royal’ as well.
Tangmere, Biggin Hill, Kenley, West Malling, Manston.
Sounds like a Luftwaffe target list….!
Actually, it was once.
Erm….At least two of those are still open!
Did Peter Vallance once live in Albany Rd, Crawley & have a son called Steven?
Yet another housing estate here we come!
Well, we have to put all the new arrivals from the rest of the planet somewhere I suppose.
Or maybe the council will raise some quick cash by selling it to Germany for use as a wind farm.
‘Preservation’ of historic airfields in Britain is virtually non existant apart from a few control towers/watch offices tucked away in the middle of what are now industrial sites
‘Preservation’ of historic sites in the UK usually involves building a slick new visitor center totally out of character with what is supposedly being preserved, and car park ofcoarse. The space age ‘American’ hangar at Duxford springs to mind as a prime example.
There is one fine notable exception; Stow Maries in Essex, being put back to its First World War appearance (almost).
Now that’s airfield preservation!

There’s a lot more to Alex James than just Blur.
Classical music aficionado and amateur cheese maker for starters. Not your usual yob popstar.
Erm……..Why do we need to know?
I see what they mean now, when its said that people on this forum are obsessed with Spitfires.
There is a lot of non standard stuff going on in that Camel cockpit which has attracted no comment whatsoever!
I drain the oil on my aeroplanes cold when the weather is warm and warm when the weather is cold. Makes a great hand warmer that way when its minus 2 outside. 🙂
The windsock visible at 1:57 shows the wind to be onto the nose!
I bet the guy flying the Jetranger had a surprise when he rotated to find a rampant Lanc heading his way.Richard
Nope.
From that camera angle, if you can see the open end of the windsock (which you can) then the wind can not be on the nose.
I’d say the wind was pretty much straight across.
All the years I’ve had my quote as my signature, and nobody has ever come to their defence….. until now! 😉
Well overdue then.:) Much maligned creatures.

I saw a wasp upon a wall
And did not like his face at all:
And so the creature had no time
To wonder whether he liked mine.
DazDaMan
Your wasps quote is insulting to wasps. They can be irritating to some people, (the flappers), but they are certainly not pointless!
Its a shame the Army moved in and destroyed one of the finest original WWII airfields in the country.
