If the Scots have any sense, they’ll chuck Salmond out and remain British.
But incase they don’t, here is the new RAF roundel:-

Why is it not possible to have a discussion about Chastise, the new film, the old film without the discussion ending up down the usual track?

I thought the reason was quite clear. They changed the dogs name.
If they had not done that, we’d be talking about Chastise, the new film and the old film.

No one is knocking these A/C, they are a pretty A/C in their own right and its a great achivement to build and fly your own Aeroplane what ever it is.
I think the problem arrises when people try to belive they are the real thing, they are not and never will be. Having news headline’s of “Spitfire Producion Line reopened” is trying to miss lead and get somthing out of using the name “Spitfire”.
All that is happening here is a group of like minded enthusiasts have got together to build a number of modern reduced scale replica’s in the same place. Nothing more and nothing less. If thats your bag all powre to you but dont get carried away by thinking you are a Warbird builder/pilot, you are not. You should however be very proud of your achivement in building and flying your replica.

This is almost verbatim from the letter by Caroline Grace to the LAA magazine when she stated that the use of the name Spitfire was offensive when used in the Mk26 squadron article.
She also stated that the people who fly these reduced scale aircraft “should in no way be compared to those who flew them during the war or indeed still fly them
I think she’s done herself a great disservice by such comments especially when apparently lumping herself in with those who fought in them.

    Anyway, back to Gibson’s dog….

As I said before, it is almost insulting to the memory of those that took part in Chastise that any new discussion ends up about the dog’s name. There seems to be an element that revels in an almost child-like way of being able to say words and get away with it.

I suggest you read the true story about Gibson and 617, if you dont think the dog mattered to him, or to the other crew members who took part in the dams raid. The dogs death to a hit & run driver had a profound effect on the sense of foreboding just prior to the operation. And just to keep certain people happy I havent mentioned the dogs ‘naughty’ name.

One wonders if in years to come, that names like Arthur, Smith, Jones or Pewtey might fall foul in a similar fashion and be struck from the record books 🙂
