Barry will also be one of the AEO’s when 558 returns to flight.
Bye Bye XL391. A well remembered serial No of the mighty V Force.
Who’s next XM603?
Unless XL391 can be bought for a few £100’s I would say let her go. It will always be remembered as the Blackpool Vulcan. Mr Bateson should have took my offer 7 years ago, but there we go!
Can you at least grab the PSP sitting units and if possible the central console indicated below please…..? :diablo:
Nev Martin has loads of these – brand new(ish) at Bruntingthorpe.
How does one get the central console out easliy???
I know of one other Vulcan cockpit that will be up for sale later this year, which is 85% complete inside.
Remember, I said Team and aircrew costs… NOT aircraft costs !!!! 😉
I will ask those who know, The £1500 fee for 558 during the RAF was to cover aircrew and team costs. I think the same will apply if all the sponsors they hope for come forward when it’s back in service.
I think if they charged a 5 figure sum for apperances then the Heritage Lottery Fund might not be very happy. The contract between 558 and the HLF has certain clauses.
If XH558 displays first at Fairford, then all they would get is an appearance fee. Remember you don’t get to see the Sea Vixen, or other private flying ventures much at RIAT.
My basis for this thread is for 558 to have it own show ‘somewhere’ so 558 gets to keep the profit if there is profit to be made these days at airshows?
I know Fairford would be good, but knowing Fairford it will be a good excuse to get the admission fee up to £40 per person, beacuse the Vulcan was there!
Hmm, a housing estate full of Footballers wifes…Can you imagine the Bling.
I agree – Woodford, but it will rain and I have to find out the crowd capacity at the other two locations.
Knowning XL391 as I do, the internal state is not good. When I looked at buying it, I made the decision that if I did I would strip inside and restore the external to A1.
Trust me inside is bad and you have to assume whats in there is scrapped and therefore you have to scratch build any items. Unless our current goverment would allow a restoration group strip one of the USA Vulcans for cockpit parts??
I hear the scrapy dropped the cockpit 3 times when scrpping it.
I for one would support the saving of XL391 nose, it has a personal attachment to me.
Where would it go? Those who worked on it must be insured to do so if on private propert – a museum as an example. This world is full of H&S issues these days.
I might be able to help having XL391 mounted as I have a spare rear craddle mounting stand that I might part with (costing nearly £2000) and I known of a front tressle that could be borrowed.
Yes, she’s in good hands and in good nick. Usual 20+ years stuff like the end caps showing a bit of age. The AAPU is run up from time to time and the air brakes are excercised also.
Just 50p will get you in the cockpit when manned (school holidays, weekeneds etc)
Newark is a good regional museum, and the tea in caf nice and hot!
They have filled the tyres with concrete at Newark, so it might prove difficult!
XL391 – yes, I did try and buy XL391 6 years ago. I think I offered £3800 for it, based on costs to scrap then. Just got a fax from Mr Bateson with “Not enough” returned!
Did have a look in her in 1996 though. BIG restoration project, just the nose alone. I wanted it just because she has some 1982 history etc.
I would have only restored the external appearence though. It has taken me long enough to get XH537 looking half decent!
I spoke to the Fire and Resue Manager some time ago about the Hurn Canberra Airframe. Worth giving him a call.
Nice to see WK163 coming back to life. Come on book her!
