Would be nice if Corgi did a TSR 2 one day!
This planet would be a different place today if it went into RAF service.
I have two sets of the engine LP and HP RPM indicators from the TSR2 but not sure which beasts they came from.
Mind is split in half between Cardigan Castle and Bawdsey.
Ahh the AN226 at Farnborough in the early 1990’s. Fantasic sight to see. One still flying and one two thirds built.
The TSR 2 would have been in service until the end of the cold war. The Falklands would have been over in about 3 days. Then they would have been target tugs for a while (sub sonic, though supersonic would have been interesting!) A couple would have been converted to MRR for a while. One would have been a display aircraft until goverment cuts in the mid 1990’s and an expensive service grounded the last airworthy one. Some years later, the CAA would have cleared the way for one to fly again and fund rasing commenced under “TSR to the Sky” campagin. A succesfull lottery application for ££millions early in the 21st century with a first test flight in 2005.
I am sure this sounds familar!
Shame the TSR was axed, the UK would be a better place today for it.
Marham has a Victor as a gate guard, it will be replaced by a Tornado soonish I believe.
There was also a lot of water on the runway which helped the effect. All four engines are still good though, thats the main thing. We will keep her active as long as we can and we also hoped to have 558 appear overhead in a couple of years time too! Watch this air space!!
Just to calm any CAA employee who reads the thread. 655’s main wheels were kept firmly on the tarmac at Wellesbourne.
655 achived 80 knots before the engines were cut and the air brakes were popped! To help slow her down Sqdn Ldr David Thomas lifted the nose for a few seconds to aerobrake.
Phew!
You can’t scrap something that the HLF have made a grant to. So, £2.7m ensures it passes to the nation, and XH558 becomes unscrappable. Sorry to disapoint!
Just to bring back the line of topic. Yesterdays press release, means THIS IS IT. We will see a Vulcan in display once again. I expect work will start within weeks on XH558. The undercarrige units left last week for refurb.
I suggest we worry about the Duxford issue in some 13 years or so time with at least three possible goverment changes by then! You never know, Brussells might come out with some silly PC directive by then on flying classic aircraft in the UK.
Keeping 655 Alive
Managed to get the nose up today.
The under carriage left Bruntingthorpe last week for refurb.
The DC3 will be static as the airfield can’t allow Pleasure Flights in this particular aircraft. The Dragon will be taking you up for about 20 minutes for £35 I think. Heli Air will be doing chopper flights for £25.
I also do agree, but unoffical fundrasing at a charity based events is a mine field in legal terms.
I have not seen her for a few years but she was had a good lash of paint on her the last time I saw her. I doubt the airshow would pay to paint it. The airshow is a business and grants money to its choosen charities.
I will hopefully see the FS in charge of 607 in a few weeks time, and will ask about its long term care and will get back with a posting later in the month.
