Mk1 Vulcan XA903 is undergoing refit. XA903 never enterd RAf service but was a test bed for Conc engines, RB199 engines and Blue Steel. XH537 a Mk2 MRR which appears in the latest edition of Flypast in its new colour scheme.
XH563 will stay in its 27 Sqdn colour scheme and will be stored at Bruntingthorpe for the short term.
Just to clear up for those who have decided to go down a certain avenue.
I have never had any intention of ‘nicking’ anything from XL391. She is over 300 miles away from me and have no intrest in her since my bid to purchase it failed 5 or so years ago.
I was informed in different conversations of at least two different people accessing 391 at night and obtaining boxes from the wheel bay and the power bay. I have no interest in these because my friends… I have no power bay or nose wheel bays in my Vulcans.
Thank you Steve for the comments.
For those who are in doubt and on the M1 this week and see XH563 on the back of a lorry, I have a reciept to prove the purchase.
Unlike Mr Baston who owns XL391, I am activley looking after these monuments of history.
Everything is restorable! Long term I have visions of it taxing, the crackle of the re heat as both engines are taken up to the max………….
The engines are still in it, but are seized but worth about £1k each due to the alloys in them. The bomb bay is untouched due to saddle tanks etc. The rear power bay under the fin is lacking a lot due to one dark night and a torch. XL391 is helping an awful lot of other vulcans!
I know – look carefully at the bottom left by the control bracket and you can see the ‘Bombing Miles to Go’ indicator. Still there, so rare and worth a fortune to a Vulc fan!
Cockpit photo via a friend. Taken about two years ago.
I offered £5.5K for 391 about 5 years ago. Nev Martin tells me the owner wants £10K.
Now you better be sitting down when you go to this link – good luck!

The best thing for 391 is for it to be scrapped and the nose restored. It has some Falklands history and it was the first 301 engine production aircraft off the production line.
I have been involved in the 605 study
In haste:
US Navy wanted to use 605 for WIG tests.
All was on track – then 9/11. project halted.
Ownership issue as it is the propert of HM Goverment and not US.
Engines would have been removed. P&W would have been used.
Wing edges would have been modified to collect data for WIG.
Would have been cheaper to use 558 if it was avaible and at the time it looked like it was going to be.
Project mothballed at the present time.
An on site contact says the Comet at Lyneham is due to be replaced by a Herc in the near future.
Thank you for the info ageorge on Scotland. Will do my best to visit East Fortune this year.
What months does Scotland get daylight? I must visit East Fortune.
Any thing else in Scotland worth a look?
I have been to Colwyn Bay!
David has a good point. Farnborough should have one allocated to the FAST museum. Quite close to Heathrow so you could get the odd ex Concorde engineer to help out, Even a taxi run at the SBAC public days?
Farnborough also carried out a lot of wind tunnel work for Concorde and my very own Vulcan 903 was retired there. 903 was the test bed for the 593.
Lets hope BA honour there word and make the next 6 months a celibration for Concorde.
BUT why Scotland should have a Concorde? Its flight plan never took it to Scotland.
I am writing to the Ch Exc of BA now.
I will suggest to him that prior to October that a 5 ship sub sonic formation should depart Heathrow to Fairford, then to Filton and returning to Heathrow via Farnborough.
As for the new homes I would speculate:
Cosford
USA – somewhere
Bruntingthorpe
Fairford
Filton
The two mothballed will be scrapped. The noses being preserved.
Taxi runs at Bruntingthorpe… now theres an idea…. Mr Walton!
