I don’t think you are going to get better than Mark’s.
However if you wanted to put on a short display and invite a few of us along with our brownies I’m sure we could all oblige with a few shots!

Isn’t it true tho, that some variants of the AH-64 like those flown by the British Army, are known as ‘Longbows’?

I think that has something to do with the radar pod on top which is called a longbow radar.

DU311 Earth in Crisis – A warming world. The latest book in my Open University degree studies. Been at it for 7 years. Roll on the finish in 18 months. Want to go back to flight sim in the evenings. Guess it’s changed a bit since Flight Sim 98.

The contract to design operate and implement the Dart Charge charging system is with Sanef for up to 10 years. The total value of this could be up to £367m. However for that they cover the cost of the recovery of fees in the UK and abroad plus operating the UK operations centre (in Leeds I believe). I think the money goes back to the government.
The website for the project is here http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/road-projects/dartford-crossing-remote-payment-scheme/
The third Thames River Crossing is still being considered by the government. Option 2 has been excluded as it would have gone through the proposed Paramount Park. Option 1 (another crossing at Dartford is on the table) plus option 3 and variant. Option 3 goes across Essex from a point further up the M25, crossing the Thames estuary on a bridge and goes through Higham in Kent to join the M2 at J1. A further option (3A) upgrades the A229 Bluebell Hill between the M2 J3 and M20 J6 to carry HGV’s on to the M20 to Dover as that is the official route. M2/A2 is not up to the same standard.

    Creaking Door
Foreign registered vehicles also have to pay up and will be chased if they don’t pay.
Incorrectly registered vehicles (do you mean false plates?) is an issue for any ANPR type of system. Ask the Police. I’d imagine the number is fairly small though.
I’d suggesting asking Sanef about the £10 issue I wouldn’t know anything about that.

The cost is an obvious risk. The bit that really concerns me is the CAP1371 review which on page 24 says
‘reviewing the criteria and requirements for the acceptance of ex-military onto the civil register, taking into account the level of support that was required to enable the Vulcan to join the civil register’
I agreed that it is reasonable to review aircraft airworthiness for flight and display. However the statement might suggest that a higher level of manufacturer support might be required as per the Vulcan. That could easily mean types not being approved if OEM support is not available for any part regardless of whether it is reasonable or a suitable alternative is available. I am no expert on this and so happy to be corrected. I just read it as a risk to many older types.

Cracking job by the aircraft crew and the airport emergency services. Pics I’ve seen show they were already on scene putting out the fire whilst passengers were still evacuating.

Add. Some interesting images over on Sky News. Can’t post them here as I don’t have image rights. See http://news.sky.com/story/1549179/catastrophic-engine-failure-causes-ba-jet-fire

Awful tragedy. Thoughts with those bereaved. Fingers crossed for the pilot, a miracle already. Agree maybe time to take stock and review some operations whilst we await official answers.

For the first time I really don’t know who will get my vote. I know who won’t. The rest of them are all talking out of the wrong orifice to a certain extent.

Have to agree with Deano’s comments about the numbers who qualify never to set foot on board. I know a guy who spent a fair amount of money, leaving his old job to train for a year. Once he got his license he found that he wasn’t what airlines were looking for and never got hired. He couldn’t afford a type rating on top and working half way around the world for next to nothing.
His wife is still working at McDonalds to help pay off the debt.
We might all like to dream about flying a commercial airliner. However most of us are best advised to stick to flight sim.
    Additional thoughts.
Its not just pilots but others as well. When I finished my cabin crew career I completed my flight ops certification. However 9/11 happened and everything went low cost just as I finished my training. I could never afford to take a job in flight ops after that. £15k a year was out of the question. I now earn a lot more than I probably would have although I would much rather have stayed in the industry. Shame.

At last the subject is being debated again. When I flew as cabin crew 20 yrs ago the subject was already being mentioned but nobody really took it seriously. Even then I only knew one Captain who flew manually to keep up his skills. Interestingly he had flown types others hadn’t (Concorde) and had far more diverse experience. He was a pilot.
I’d suggest it is reasonably predictable that the unpredictable and unexpected will occur at some point. Can those at the pointy end cope with that if they are never allowed to practice their skill outside of the sim?
