Sad news. He was a journalist you could trust. Rare breed these days. I hope the Harrier crews are allowed one last sortie to pay tribute to him as he did to them.

Apologies I missed as well. Hope you’ve managed to get the crisp remains out of the sofa by now!

What happens when the weather’s bad? I’m no expert but I thought that under military rules there was more leeway about when to fly than under civi rules? I certainly don’t want anyone to fly if it isn’t safe but are we likely to see more rescue requests turned down because of civilian rules?

I’m no expert only ever having flown 4 hours in a C172 and 1 hour in an R22. However all I can say is that there is a vast difference between fixed wing and rotary. I’d be inclined to say give rotary a go next and see if that is your thing before worrying about what type to fly.
My next thought is to try microlights to see if I like them and can afford that sort of flying.
EDIT Forgot to mention the turbulence. I worked down the back for a few years. You get used to it pretty quickly whether you’re in a small turbo prop or a 747. Do your pre flight planning properly to stay away from the obvious stuff, don’t get too close behind anything bigger than you (once pulled in a bit close behind a 747 on approach to LGW in an ATR42, like hitting a brick wall, spilt my tea and head butted the bulkhead) and don’t think you are OK because you are nearly on the deck. Last minute cross winds used to scare me more. I once sat on the stand in Jersey with a full load on board and a tug attached to the frontend and the aircraft was still being blown around in 60 kt winds. We stayed closed up until it passed. Moral of the story, don’t go trying to beat nature.

Thanks Wicked Willip. Goes to show you never know what is on your doorstep even if you are a parish councillor and are supposed to know what is going on!

    OK Midnight rant

Go Compare – Go **** off somewhere else
    Cillit Bang! – SHUT UP
Lloyds, for the journey – More like the road to hell with them, hence why they use a train.
Halifax, Good things happen when – I turn you off
For JML read Ronco (Ratner?) – total cr** advertised once a year near Christmas
Buy a smelly candle and make your house smell like christmas – yeah a house that has caught fire smells just like a turkey burnt to a crisp

I’ll add more as I think of them.

Apart from our own, we only got one other vote? What is this, the Eurovision Song Contest?…..

My thoughts entirely. I’ll try to be careful here to not break the house rules but did our media ask too many questions about the accepted standards in other countries?
I’m doing a course in politics at the moment and one thing that has come out of it is that in some areas of the world it is considered normal to pay for assistance. You offend if you question this.
Was our medias timing not in the public interest and should any questions relating to how business is done been handled a different way? Is the wikileaks way a bit too much of a blunt instrument.
Yes I am ‘gutted’ to use a football term. Would have prefered it to the Olympics personally.

As well as remembering all the good advice on here already try doing what you like if you can afford it.
Try them both for an hour or two and see which one you prefer.

Well worth a punt. Just hope they don’t sell their soul to the devil in a mad dash for market share somewhere. That often has a sting in the tail.
