I think we are going to have some fun with this post!
We all want to be the fat controller of Gatwick Airport and have our own ideas about how to run it!!
Here’s my mine for you all to shoot down in flames:diablo: Some of this I’ve said before. I write this in an easy reading ‘local’ format and mean no disrespect to anyone involved. Deep groval to the moderators.
If Dick buys Gatwick he will be the principle long haul operator after BA go to LHR T5 when C building is built. Sleezyjet will take over the North terminal. Between them Dick and Sleezy will get an agreement going that will fill up Gatwick, their aircraft and their pockets. They will also free up slots for other new carriers at Gatwick. That’s what it has been good at for years.
Us punters will be happy and so will Dick & Stelios. Good luck to everyone. Where’s the problem?
Last I heard the fuel system was being being stripped, rebuilt and examined in detail.
Being commercially sensitive as you would expect, finding out anything reliable which can be reported is difficult. Yes it was odd and is taking some investigation. That takes time to get right which is what matters.
It won’t be long though (comparatively) before it’s on Sky and we are all complaining we’ve seen it before!!
What you should have/want and what you can afford are often in life not able to balanced. You take what you can get rather than nothing at all, as long as it’s safe. If you didn’t we would severely limit our options. So they can’t/don’t have a licensed engineer on staff. Then we have to accept second best and wait till they can get one.
I go to Dunsfold each year if I’m not on shift cos I like it. This year I changed shifts to make sure I could go and see 558. Bummer she didn’t make it but I still enjoyed the show. I was actually more disappointed that the Hunter wasn’t Miss Demeanour on the day.
Life isn’t fair, things aren’t right. We could all find things we could do better. Whilst we should keep trying to improve and learn from the past we should also appreciate what we have got. It’s better than nothing. Do you want a chance of seeing a flying Vulcan or no chance?
I see she’s planned for Goodwood now. Maybe I will get to see her flying again!
I visited the Science Museum a few weeks ago and saw references to the area in the aviation section. A few pictures of people who were leading the field in those days.
I have to be honest and say I was interested as I live just five miles from Small Dole rather than I was interested in gliding and so can’t remember the details. Might be worth I look at their records.
Maybe I ought to find out more about gliding with Southdowns just around the corner (and overhead):)
Glad to see you also remember the turbo props when you’re at LGW Tom! I see you got ATR72 BXTN last year on your website.
I remember the aircraft well. I took it on it’s first night stop when it was new. Not sure if that was it’s first day in operation or second, we went to somewhere in Germany with it.
Very nice to have a new aircraft on one hand but on the other not so good as the kit was in different places to the old aircraft which made you think a bit! I have a few pics of it in it’s original BA colours somewhere that I’ll scan in at some stage.:)
Without being on an airfield perimeter road where you will likely get asked to leave your only option is to go to the 08 end as Josh has described. If you get lost ask anyone how to get to the Flight Tavern, Charlwood Road. Walk past that on your left and keep walking until you get to the end of the runway. About ten minutes walk from the pub.
Forecast wind is 150 degrees 5 kts. Therefore 08R could well be the runway in use.
Josh will likely be more up to date than me but I’m not sure you will see much from the 26L end if they are on 08R. Most departings will already be well above you by then.
Have a good day.
Update is now on the TVOC website.
Something to do with a retraction mechanism for a gear door. Evidently it was a simple fix but they can’t get it officially signed off until Monday. Therefore no flying this weekend. Bit of a downer as I live local to Dunsfold and Shoreham and she’ll miss both.:(
However I’d rather wait until she was 100% than see them take any chances.
Looking at their brochures Volvo seem to think the new XC60 has a lot of individual design about it.
Sadly I can’t afford to find out. Will just have to go and press my nose up against the showroom glass like I did with the aircraft model shop window all those years ago!:D

Please add me to all the above comments.
All the best.

The ATR is a bit different to most aircraft. The front two exits are type 3 exits, the small type you normally get overwing on bigger aircraft. No slides on an ATR as they are so low to the ground anyway. Yes you would normally expect just the side not on fire to be used but it depends on what the cabin crew saw and how they viewed it at the time. The pax initially did move to the front of the aircraft from these exits. That may well have been the best option rather than hold them up going out of the right hand side or walking back through the aircraft to the main door at the rear and therefore passing the area of the fire. I can’t put my hands on an ATR safety card at the moment and I haven’t been near an ATR for a few years now but I seem to recall that is the correct procedure.
Down the back is a different story. On the right of the aircraft is a very small odd catering/baggage door which is not very suitable to get people out in a hurry.
The only main door with stairs is at the rear and on the left. Therefore if no fire is immediately obvious outside of this door it is very appropriate to use this one as you will evacuate alot of people very quickly via this door. Clearly the crew gave instructions to the pax as they again moved away to the rear of the aircraft initially.
I can’t see clearly on the video but I think there were two cabin crew however there may only have been one, I used to do single crew flights. This makes it very difficult to control everyone.
On any aircraft it normally makes sense to get an able bodied person off first to help other pax and to keep the cabin crew on board as long as possible to aid the evacuation and to try and ensure no one is left behind.
There’s no accounting for the public at incidents like this. From what I can make out the crew and fire department did a good job of getting people out and under control as fast as possible.
Had that ever happened to me I would have been very happy with the outcome as seen on the video.
Ah Bremen, I remember it well! Do they still have the crew bus shop on the airfield bringing out crates of Becks at very silly prices?!
I seem to recall flight crews radioing ahead with the orders after we had worked out roughly how many crates we could put on board with our expected load. Crew bus drivers were never happy back at base as they had to bring out two buses to collect us and our load.
The Beluga we parked next to one night. Typical I didn’t have my camera with me on that occasion. Safe to say I did my usual. Hi Vis on, wander over, excuse me mister, can I look at your aeroplane? Got to climb up into it (like going up in to a loft) and see a large pair of wings in the hold. Good to see something different.:)
Very sad to see reported on the TVOC website the death of Lynne Braithwaite.
I’ve been following the 558 story for quite some time and Lynne was always there with her expertise and a smile on her face. She also took the time to answer any questions from anyone on forums.
I had the pleasure of meeting her once. On a visit one cold winters morning a friend and I were waiting in the cafe to be shown around. Within just a couple of minutes Lynne had invited us over to join her and chat even though she was in the middle of eating and was obviously on a break in her own time.
I hope money and flight hours can be found for 558 to provide a fitting tribute to her at the appropriate time.
23/08/08 Edit
TVOC did indeed find both. Thanks.
I’ve often thought it would be Gatwick for the chop, and I can’t see BAA being bothered about losing it long term.
Stanstead could be a new version of Heathrow for BAA if they get the planning permissions. Better roads, less congested airspace? Also going to be better rail links with crossrail. Likely a better long term bet than Gatwick.
My best guess for the future is that BA will pull out of Gatwick when T5C opens. Easyjet will get Gatwick North to themselves plus one or two others, much the same as BA have at the moment. Room and slots then available for some more start up airlines at Gatwick.
No one really losing out long term. More just a case of shuffling things around to get the best fit.
