Scooter, I am talking about the recent announcement from a US government body that the F35 is to be dearer than previously thought, and there will be further delays of delivery. These reports may be wrong, but they are what I mean by blowout, costs and delivery time.
Different ball game now that the Australian government has announced keeping the Super Hornet order. Just a matter of whether they change the numbers required I suppose.
For the life of me I cant see the F18 as a replacement for the F111. We should be getting Strike Eagles. Superior range, weapons load, and speed to the F18E/F. Also a Boing product, so should not cause much upheaval if chosen instead of SH. As replacement for the F18, we should be considering options now, in case F35 blowout continues.
Gripen, Rafale, whatever, but we should be doing a plan B.
I just googled DD(X) and got similar figures.
In my eyes this makes them very comparable with the F100 to be built at Adelaide for $8.8 billion (au), but the DD(x) would be like an Arliegh Burke compared to the F100 being a OHP, in capabilities. It might be in our favour to join the US program and buy two of them, with a option for a third. Two would have more capabilities than three F100.s. and we would probably get them sooner. Less manpower required also.
What is the anticipated cost of the DD(X) then? More than $4 billion each?
The Super Seasprite was originally going to equip OPV we were going to build with Malaysia. When Malaysia pulled out, Australia cancelled the OPV’s and kept the Super Seasprite to equip the Anzacs.
It will be interesting to see what is ordered to replace them, with Australia trying to keep the number of its helicopter types down.
Tiddles and Jezza, thanks for your replys. They must have cut me out somehow. Never mind. I wonder who they are insulting now! Are there any other Aussie Defence Forums around?
This is mainly addressed to any Aussies on this board. What happened to The Fifth Column? Has it died?
Can anyone post a comparison of the performances of Super Hornets fitted with the original engine and the F414EDE? Such as differences in speed, payload, and range, if any?
At this stage it looks like the status quo will be maintained, that is 24 Super Hornets and 100 F35’s. Not my preference, but most likely scenario.
I hope we are not stupid enough to become a single aircraft air force. I dont really care what aircraft we purchase, as long as there are at least two types. If we were one aircraft type, and it was grounded, we would be virtuely defenceless.
This looks like a sales pitch to me. Maybe the F22 is not so unattainable after all.
In the event that Australia decides not to put all of its eggs in the one basket. with the F35 being the dominant plane in numbers, what plane would best complement the F35? F18-F, F22, F15E. Rafale. Eurofighter, Su-34?
The F22 and Eurofighter would probably perform better in the Air to Air role, F15E and Su-34 would certainly perform better in a bomber role. What are your thoughts?
I have it on good authority that Australia is to cancel the order for the F-18F’s. re-neg on the F-35’s, and re-open the production line for the Boomerang.
ST-21, you made a pretty good arguement for the Rafale in your post, especially since the French deal included Australian assembly.
Maybe the F111’s will be tested with the new testing system and if they come up trumps we wont need the superhornets. Although I personally would not like to see us rely on just on type of aircraft, be it the F35 or F22 or whatever. Look what has happened with the F15’s recently.
