I would still like to see the Armidale order reduced from 14 to 12, and a small order of OPV’s made, 6 -8. Either the Austal OPV or the Tenix 85m. Unless Incat can come up with something better.
The basis of this thread is that the US is only receiving new F-22 and F-35’s. Are’nt they also receiving F18E-F’s? I dont know about F-15E’s and F-16’s. Can anyone enlighten me?
I believe that the main reason the F35 was selected was the fact that by doing so the government effectively postponed the need to spend a lot of money on the project by 10 years or so. Any plane that was a real plane and not a paper one (remember I am talking about when the decision was made some 4 or 5 years ago) we would have had to order and be receiving same by now, and we would be paying for same. We still have some 8 years before that happens with the F35.
And is it not going to be an upgraded version of the SH? That is on offer in case of F35 delays, I mean.
If the RNZAF were to try and re-establish itself with fighting aircraft, I would love to see them go Swedish.
I still believe we need more than one type of aircraft.
If the F-18E/F and the F-35 are both meant to do the same type of work, as is the Rafael, I cant see the point in having two of those aircraft to supplement each other. The only advantage would be if a problem occurred that required all of one type of aircraft to be grounded, we would still have something.
The F-22 has a strong Air Defence element. Something Australia needs with its vast coastline and size. It would complement any of the MRCA type aircraft nicely.
UVCOV wrote The F 35 isn’t slow, and in no way will be slower than th f 18A.
The F35 is rated at 1.5
The F18A at 1.8
The F111 which it is supposed to be replacing, 2.5.
Of course it is slow. And single engined.
I think that there would be a large number of Australians who would not be happy to see our warplanes to consist of one type only, as I previously described it, a slow (the slowest fighter we would have had since the Avon Sabre), single engined plane that has good stealth qualities from certain angles, which is very reliant on software etc. A breakdown in the software would see our entire warplane fleet out of action. I for one would love to see us reduce our F35 numbers, by purchasing some F-22’s.
I know that everyone seems impressed with the F-35, but I see it as a slow, single engined aircraft thast is low observable from some angles. I would much rather see Australia with a small squadron or two of F-22’s, and the bulk of the RAAF made up of Rafales.
If Australia was to get the F-22a, how many would we need? If we wanted ywo small squadrons of them, would 8. 10. 12 a squadron be realistic? How many would need all up?
It seems to me that there are longer serving presidents who actually won an election, who have not had an aircraft carrier named after them. Is this reserved solely for Republicans?
I would like to see the RAN get two smaller amphibs than planned, the South Korean 200m ship at 18’500t looks quite competent. Then a further two larger ships that would be aircraft capable. Perhaps as a joint project with Japan, who may also be interested in renewing their naval aviation.
Incidentially, Happy New year everyone!
What would be the odds of a F-18F beating a like number of F15K, Rafaele, or Eurofighters? Not good I should think.
Tiddles, I thought that Mistral was putting forward an extended version of the Mistral. To what extent I have no idea. But typical of us we would not want an “off the shelf” model. Wouild not cost enough.
Posted by Bustermorley… Yeah … I know the Rhino isn’t a world beater. Most of my reasons for its selection had more to do with interoperability and some generation 4.5 features. It isn’t up there with the Typhoon or Rafale.
If they are superior to the F-18F, why has’nt the RAAF considered them? Is it American or nothing?
