Northrop Grumman Delivers Enhanced Radar for F/A-22 Raptor

BALTIMORE — Northrop Grumman Corporation has delivered a next-generation variant of the active electronically scanned array (AESA) fire-control radar for the U.S. Air Force’s F/A-22 Raptor air dominance fighter. The new radar will undergo aircraft integration testing this summer at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.

Designated AN/APG-77(V)1, the radar variant will enable air-to-ground capability provided by a new software suite that is being developed under a separate modernization program. The company has captured advances made in AESA design for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and the Block 60 F-16 aircraft and incorporated them back into the APG-77. In addition, the (V)1 is more affordable than the current version, in part because the production line relies on a greater degree of automation.

“The (V)1’s first flight on an F/A-22 will mark a key milestone for the combined Air Force/industry team,” said John C. Johnson, vice president of Combat Avionic Systems at Northrop Grumman. “It paves the way for the integration of the new software suite, which will allow Raptor pilots to perform electronic warfare missions as well as attack fixed and moving targets on the ground in all-weather, day/night conditions.”

Johnson added that software development for the radar continues on schedule, with over a year of integration work completed both in the laboratory and on flying testbed aircraft.

BrahMos may go commercial in a year, says India CEO

MOSCOW: Several countries are interested in purchasing the BrahMos cruise missiles, CEO and managing director of the BraHmos project in India Dr A.S. Pillai said in Moscow, adding that the missiles may be delivered to some of the countries from six months to a year.

Speaking to this website’s newspaper, Pillai said that after 10 successful tests in India and the induction of the BrahMos by the Indian armed forces, the “what next?” question was also on President Kalam’s mind.

“I will not name the countries, but there are several friendly nations which have approached us. Being a joint venture, it is up to the governments of both the countries to sit down and decide when and with whom the commercial sales of the missile system should take place,” he said.

“In my opinion, within six months to a year’s time, some marketing deals for the multi-platform, multi-target missile system may be signed,” Pillai added.

According to the scientist who has been associated with it from its inception, the project has now entered its fourth — and most profitable — stage. Pillai said that following the interest shown in the induction of the BrahMos missiles by the three Indian armed forces, and its proposed induction into the Indian Navy by the end of the year, India would also like the Russian side to reciprocate. “We are hoping the Russian Navy would similarly plan to induct the BraHmos soon. After successful trials, product improvement and marketing are the priorities for India.”

Stealth frigate launch on May 27

Mumbai, May 24 (UNI): The third frigate of Shivalik Class, built by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) will be launched here on May 27.

The frigate, incorporating stealth features, will be launched by Kum Kum Prakash, wife of Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Arun Prakash.

The two frigates of Shivalik Class, indigenously built by MDL, were in an advanced stage of “outfitting” and would be inducted into service from 2007, MDL Chairman and Managing Director, Rear Admiral R M Bhatia, told mediapersons here on Monday.

These multi-purpose frigates are of 4,900 tonne displacement and are 142.5 m in length and 16.90 m in breadth. They are capable of speed in excess of 30 knots.

Several modifications have been incorporated in the third frigate based on the experience gained in the earlier two version, Capt S M Murthy, Director, (Ship Building), explained.

It would also have vertical launch missile, Capt Murthy said.

The formidable array of weapons and sensors, packed into steel hull of the ship, would give her the ability to deal with threats from the air, on the surface as well as sub-surface.

Rear Admiral Bhatia said the MDL were also building three destroyers.

Future Fighter and Engine for It Being Developed Should Have Qualitatively Different Materials

The future tactical aviation aircraft complex ((PAK AF)) and the aircraft engine for it that are being developed should have qualitatively and principally new materials, the VIAM general director, Evgeniy Kablov, thinks.

In his opinion, the new generation aircraft engine will differ in principle from those that exist by the fact that the volume of polymers and metallic composite materials and ceramic materials will grow.

The new requirements for the future materials are stipulated by the though requirements for the aircraft engine – it has to obtain a qualitatively new ratio of the engine thrust to its mass. As of today, such a ratio is approximately 8-10:1, but the new generation engine should have a ratio of not less than 20:1, E. Kablov emphasized.

According to his information, in the American new generation F-22 “Raptor” fighter, in comparison with the aircraft existing today, a higher volume of polymer composites are used which amount to a level of approximately 35 percent and approximately up to 40 percent are titanium high-strength alloys, which correspondingly have reduced the volume of aluminum alloys being used.

Western Europe and U.S. experts have raised the priority of new materials and chemical technologies to second place in significance after information technologies and biotechnologies. The foreign experts recognized that the new materials are the main factor for the increase in competitiveness of new products, the VIAM head noted.

Several years ago, in the opinion of VIAM specialists, the share of materials in the construction of the future fighter’s airframe was supposed to be: aluminum alloys – 18 percent, aluminum-lithium alloys – 20 percent, titanium alloys – 22 percent, polymers – 30 percent, steel – 5 percent and similar materials – 5 percent.

Russian Air Force grounds MiG-29 fleet

Moscow, May 13 (PTI) The Russian Air Force has grounded its MiG-29 fleet till the end of the probe into yesterday’s crash of one of the fighters at Andreapol base near here.

“It’s a normal practice to ground the fleet of similar planes or helicopters after a crash. The flight recorders of the ill-fated MiG-29 fighter have been recovered and their decoding could take 10-14 days. During this period rest of such planes with the airforce would remain grounded,” a Russian Air Force officer was quoted as saying by ITAR-TASS.

According to preliminary reports, the MiG-29 lost control while approaching the runway for landing and burst into flames after hitting the ground. The pilot of the plane was killed in the crash.

    Schlem or something isn’t it?

    NSTs-27 Shchel-3UM.

During the tests the OEPS-27 received a new element – the Shchel-3UM
helmet-mounted target designator. This had been developed at the Kiev-based Arsenal plant (chief designer A.K. Mikhailik) and incorporated a
helmet-mounted viewing device and an optical location block carrying a
scanner to determine the angle at which the pilots head was turned.

The helmet-mounted target designator allowed the pilot to measure the
line-of-sight coordinates within +60 deg. in azimuth and within -15 deg. to +60 deg. in elevation, with the line of sight changing at a speed up to 20 deg./sec.

It also let the pilot place the target into the OLS’s automatic acquisition ‘box’
and at the same time transfer the line-of-sight coordinates to the OBRS and
missile homers. Using both the helmet-mounted target designator and the OLS, a pilot could reduce the sighting time in air combat, quickly acquire a
target and give target designation to the missile homers before the target
entered the acquisition cone of the missile. This made it possible to launch
a missile at the maximum admissible angle.

    CONSTRUCTION OF AIR DEFENCE SHIP

The Government has approved the indigenous construction of an Air Defence Ship of approximately 37,500 metric tones displacement at Cochin Shipyard Ltd, Kochi for the Indian Navy in January 2003 at an estimated cost of Rs. 2880 crores.

The concept design defining the overall ship dimensions, evolution of hull form, general arrangement drawings, structure, stability, weight and space analysis and hydro-dynamic model tests have been completed.

The contracts for outsourcing activities related to Propulsion System Integration and Detailed Engineering and Documentation have been signed. The contract for procurement of steel from SAIL has also been signed.

The construction of the aircraft carrier is likely to be completed by 2011 – 2012. India would be one of the few countries in the world who have the capability to manufacture an aircraft carrier.

There is a requirement of three aircraft carriers so that two aircraft carriers are operationally available at all times. Presently, only one aircraft carrier INS Virat is in operation with the Navy.

This information was given by the Defence Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee in separate written replies to Shri Janardhana Poojary, Smt N P Durga, Shri Rama Muni Reddy Sirigireddy and Shri V Narayanasamy in Rajya Sabha today.
