Lockheed offers exclusive F-16s to India

“If India’s requirements are beyond any existing fighters, we are prepared to make upgraded F-16s to India’s specifications with complete transfer of technology,” Mike Kelly, Senior Executive of Lockheed Martin told PTI in comments that assume importance after US Administration’s decision to clear sales of high-technology fighters to India and Pakistan.

“We have in the past taken up building of such exclusive fighters for UAE and are prepared to manufacture F-16s to India’s special requirements,” he said.

Lockheed Martin is currently manufacturing F-16s in two versions.

While Block 50-52 was being supplied to US and European air forces, the Block 60 was developed exclusively for United Arab Emirates.

“We are ready to develop new Block 70 for the IAF”, the Lockheed Martin official said.

US package likely to have other aircraft too

Kelly said that the total US package would include provisions for product support and training of personnel and under the programme being worked out, 24 Indian pilots would be trained in the US on F-16s and 50-60 personnel for maintenence purpose.

On the sale of P3C Orion long range maritime reconnaisance aircraft to the Navy, the Lockheed officials said that negotiations were continuing and the deal could be signed by the year end.

The official also expressed optimism on the sale of six to seven C-130 Hercules transport aircraft for the Air Force. He said these aircraft would be configured for special missions with a contract likely to be concluded by 2007.

Kelly said Lockheed’s sister company Sikorsky had been shortlisted for bidding for Navy’s requirement of anti-submarine warfare helicopters as replacement for the ageing British Seaking helicopters.

are they still going to build the home built cariers and use the optional orders of mig29k on them with naval tejas fighters? or is it just an idea and only the new russian carrier for india being the only new future carrier for india?

The indigenous aircraft carrier, a.k.a. the ADS is going to be built along with the purchase of the Gorshkov ( which will be called INS Vikramaditya in Indian service ).

    INDIAN NAVY’s AMBITIOUS CARRIER PROGRAMME

    New Delhi, 27 March 2005

    Major Project Milestones

The steel cutting of ADS is scheduled to begin on 11 Apr 05 and the Hon’ble Raksha Mantri will be the chief guest for the ceremony. The keel of the ship is to be laid in Oct 07 with lowering of pre-outfitted engine room blocks into the Building Dock at CSL. The ship after construction and trials is scheduled for delivery in 2012.

    Design

Design of this prestigious ship is being undertaken by the Navy’s own Design Bureau at Kailash Colony in New Delhi under Cmde MK Badhwar and Cdr Kushawa as the main elements besides their strong team. The preliminary design has already been completed and the work related to detailed design is in hand. Production drawings for approximately 5000 tonnes of steel work are already available in the yard. The ship will be built using IHOP (Integrated Hull Outfit and Painting) method and modular construction for which GODREJ, STACO of Korea and a firm from Dubai are in competition. The ship will be constructed using high strength ABA grade steel developed in house between DRDO and SAIL. About 456 tonnes of steel has already been received in the yard from Russia and Bhillai. The ADS will require about 20,000 tonnes of steel.

    Killer in the Queue

Interview of Mr. A.S. Pillai – CEO BrahMos

Russian president Putin visited the BrahMos design centre during his visit to India. Will it help the missile programme in any way?

Both the governments have appreciated the progress the joint venture has made in a short time and acknowledged it as a role model for any future joint ventures in strategic partnership. President Putin’s visit has given the go-ahead for the air-launched version of the missile to be developed and integrated with Su-30MKI. His visit to the BrahMos Weapon Design Centre and his meeting with the CEOs of the consortium of industries of BrahMos gave a major impetus to this programme, including the export component.

President Kalam gave some marketing tips to Team BrahMos. What’s the missile’s marketing mantra?

President Kalam said the missile should be marketed aggressively and exported in a year to take advantage of the already established product leadership. He also said competition will come within the next four to five years and hence production and marketing goals have to be fulfilled immediately. We are fully geared to fulfil his wish, as the joint venture has already established production centres, weapon complex design centre, international marketing group, training and documentation centre and participated in many international exhibitions to sensitise the market. BrahMos Aerospace is a total solutions company and our marketing mantra for BrahMos is: Many missions, one missile.

How is BrahMos different from other missiles?

In recent times, subsonic cruise missiles have been the most dominant weapon system in tactical warfare. The ability of BrahMos to fly at three times the speed of sound in a variety of trajectories, from multiple platforms against multiple targets with high precision, and to remain undetectable due to low radar cross section, makes it the most potent weapon system ever developed.

The Su-30MKI is said to be an ideal platform of BrahMos. Did you have to modify the missile to achieve this?

The present missile with certain modifications has been conceptualised to be an ideal weapon for Su-30MKI. The modifications ensure lesser weight of the missile for same performance, utilising the initial velocity of the aircraft. Design and development has just commenced. Interface details with the platform are being finalised involving partner institutions and the user.

Rheinmetall Defence Electronics Supplies Flight Simulator for MiG-29 K Carrier Aircraft

Acting in close cooperation with the Russian aircraft manufacturer MiG, the Simulation and Training unit of Rheinmetall Defence Electronics GmbH (RDE) will be supplying the Indian Navy with a full-mission simulator complete with Avior laser system for the carrier variant of its MiG-29 K fighter planes.

The training suite will be equipped with the Avior laser system, which will also be used in the Tornado flight simulator of the German Air Force. Thanks to the latest laser technology, Avior offers a brilliant picture with very high contrast levels. For this particular project, it will ensure an exceptionally high degree of realism in simulating take-offs and landings on an aircraft carrier. In simulating a night landing, for example, the lights of the runway can be simulated extremely vividly. Owing to the enhanced image contrast, the Avior laser projection system depicts the day and night view much more realistically than other systems.

The simulator is scheduled for delivery to the Indian Navy in 2007.

Court case closed, HDW wants to work with navy

NEW DELHI: Leading German defence firm HDW on Thursday signalled its desire to re-establish links with the Indian Navy in the wake of a court here closing a case related to the alleged payment of kickbacks for a submarine deal in the 1990s.

Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW), which owns Germany’s largest shipyard and is considered the builder of the world’s most modern non-nuclear submarines, came under a cloud in the late 1980s following alleged payment of kickbacks to clinch a contract to sell four submarines to India.

In a statement here, HDW said: “During the long and thorough investigation by the Indian jurisdiction, the case was examined from all angles by CBI and no evidence could be found to prove or establish the allegations.

HDW’s move to “re-establish” links with the Indian Navy comes at a time when the maritime force is set to ink a major contract to build several submarines at a state-run shipyard in Mumbai.

The submarine building line at Mazagon Dockyard in Mumbai was created in the late 1980s to build vessels using technology and expertise provided by HDW.

However, only two submarines were built there before the kickback allegations surfaced and the facility has remained idle since then. The German firm was blacklisted and could not bid for any further contracts with India’s armed forces.

Referring to the closure of the court case, HDW said it was “now cleared to re-establish its good relations to the Indian Navy and is interested together with its partner MAN Ferrostaal Aktiengesellschaft to follow up the Indian Navy modernisation programme”.
