Brahmos Regiment to lend cutting edge to defence arsenal

The Government has given the go-ahead to the Army to raise a regiment of Brahmos missile thereby giving India a definite edge over Pakistan in conventional warfare. The regiment to be raised in the ongoing Tenth Five-year plan period 2002-2007 will have 18 missile launchers and guided by indigenously developed satellites in the low-earth orbit which would also provide secure communication to the armed forces.

The significant decision to raise the Brahmos missile, jointly developed and produced by India and Russia, was taken by the recently held Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), sources said here on Thursday.

New army chief General JJ Singh also hinted on Thursday that Brahmos would be inducted into the Army. The Army would raise the regiment of the land version of Brahmos missile with a capability of hitting a land based target at 300 kms. and sources said it would be more sophisticated and accurate than the naval version.

The naval version was tested some months back and already operationalised and the air version was in development stages. However, the land to land version was nearly ready for induction, it was learnt and it would road based and mounted specially built Tatra vehicles.

Mi-8 engines of IAF brought back smiles in Sri Lanka

COIMBATORE, Feb 3: Flying about 420 sorties, and airlifting 2.35 lakh kgs of relief materials and 673 people, the drone of the Mi-8 engines of Indian Air Force has helped bring back smiles on the faces of Tsunami-affected people in Sri Lanka.

Having been the first to arrive, the compliment of 60 crew led by Wing Commander U K Sharma, Commanding Officer of 109 helicopter unit at Sulur, has won the hearts of people in the island, making the defence forces proud.

On getting orders, the team with six Mi-8 helicopters, led by himself, reached Katunayake airbase, Colombo, with 500 kgs of medicines, the very next day after the tragedy struck, Sharma said.

On the very first day, 180 passengers, including 15 seriously injured, were evacuated by IAF helicopters to Colombo.

Women and children were in tears thanking IAF personnel while disembarking at the Colombo airfield, he said.

“This is a most touching experience to the entire crew”, Sharma said.

The Mi-8 helicopters flew sorties into relatively unknown areas like Galle, Tengalle, Hikkaduwa, Amlamgoda, Hambantota, Panama, Batticaloa and Amparai, which included LTTE-controlled regions, he said.

“Clouding and poor visibility did not deter the steadfast aircrew, who unflinchingly achieved the set task for the day, day after day, sortie after sortie”, Sharma said.

There was no fatigue as IAF pilots kept flying day in and out airlifting relief materials from all over the world to the far-flung and inaccessible regions, Sharma said.

While the pilots were busy flying from sunrise to sunset, 270 hours during the period, the technical and administration support proved their worth by keeping the copters flying fit, Sharma said.

    Completes 100th flight in Tejas

BANGALORE, FEB. 3. He has done something very few pilots have done. Group Captain R.K.S. Bhandauria, test pilot at the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) here, completed his 100th sortie on the Light Combat Aircraft, Tejas, today. He has become the second test-pilot to achieve this feat after Squadron Leader Suneet Krishna, and all systems of the aircraft are performing well, the ADA said.

Three Tejas aircraft have been flying for expansion of the “flight test envelope” to an altitude of 15 km, Mach 1.4 speeds and angle of attack of 20 degrees with +4.5 G to -1 G forces, the ADA said. So far, eight test pilots of the Indian Air Force have evaluated these aircraft, including Air Commodore R.K. Sharma, Project Director of the ADA. Tejas aircraft have so far completed 187 hours of flight-testing in 340 flight-test sorties on three prototype aircraft.

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) that currently produces the Hawkeye 2000 early warning aircraft for the US Navy will be demonstrating its capabilities at the Aero India 2005 Air Show from February 9-13 in Bangalore, according to a company spokesman.

The spokesman said, the company was currently offering the aircraft to the Indian navy as the solution to its requirements for an airborne early-warning and battle-management command-and control-system.

According to Farrell, there are several benefits to this growing international use of the Hawkeye 2000. The aircraft offers a powerful and highly automated target detection and tracking capability, and the ability to manage peacetime, crisis and wartime operations. It also gives international allies interoperability with the US Navy’s Hawkeye fleet and the benefits of United States-developed technology improvements and support.

Another benefit of the Hawkeye 2000, the company claims, is its “open” system architecture. Based on commercial off-the-shelf technology, an open architecture allows users to easily upgrade, add or remove components from a network.

Watched by the Union Defence Production Secretary, Shekhar Dutt, the HAL chairman, A.K. Baweja, hundreds of HAL employees and the media, the project test pilot, Wing Commander P.S. Hehe Matt, I knew that someone would pick on that one. It is the reporter’s opinion that the F-16 is much admired and I doubt that much can be done to change it.
