    I forgot to mention, in additional news, India will be starting research on an air-launched Brahmos with the project to commence in 2-3 years time.

    NAZ Sokol Intends to Complete Delivery to India of Aircraft Equipment Sets for Upgrade of MiGs by 2005

    OAO Nizhniy Novgorod Sokol Aircraft Building Plant (included in the Kaskol Group of Companies) plans to complete deliveries to India aircraft equipment sets for upgrade of MiGs before the end of 2004, they reported to the NTA-Privolzh’e agency at the enterprise.

    According to the agency source, the contract for the delivery of aircraft equipment for the upgrade of 123 MiG-21bis airplanes for India’s armed forces was concluded in 1996.

    As reported earlier, after execution of the contract, Sokol is counting on receiving an order for the upgrade of 50 more MiGs for India.

    In 2003, the Nizhniy Novgorod aircraft plant’s share of export was 68.8 percent of the total volume of the plant’s sales. India and Sudan are the main markets.

    LCA has completed 301 Test Flights successfully (TD1-107, TD2-119, PV1-75).

    Another milestone for Tejas

    The Light Combat Aircraft, Tejas, today reached yet another milestone by crossing the 300th flight test sortie mark. Wg. Cdr R.R. Tyagi flew the test sortie on Technology Demonstrator-2, the 116th flight of TD2, an Aeronautical Development agency statement said.

    The sortie lasted 25 minutes, in which flutter tests were conducted, it said.

    The Technology Demonstrator-1 (TD1) has completed 106 flights, TD2 119 flights and Proto Vehicle 1 (PV1) 75 flight test sorties. The flights include 82 supersonic flights, the statement said.

    … yes u guys heard it right ….. just 2day got to hear from ISRO Chairman that India’s RSLV would be ready by 3-4 years.

    The 3-4 years time is stated for the completion of the RLV-TD, Technology Demonstrator.

    STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY DIVISION

    Full scale fatigue testing of the fin of MiG-21 bis was initiated. 16 blocks of service loading amounting to 3200 hours of flying have been simulated. This has brought it on par with the test life simulated on the front fuselage and the wing (the main airframe). Based on this test, a life extension of 1000 hrs has been given to the MiG-21 bis fleet.

    Plane plans with Russia role take off

    Bangalore, Nov. 14: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is set to team up with a Russian aerospace major for joint design and manufacture of a multi-role transport aircraft.

    HAL and Irkutsk Aviation Corporation, Siberia, plan to break into the market with two versions — a 100-seater passenger jet and a cargo version with the capacity to ferry 18 to 20 tonnes.

    The two companies, which are eyeing the multi-billion-dollar global market, believe the worldwide demand for the passenger jet version will be at least 400.

    To start with, they plan to roll out 100-odd aircraft of the cargo version for the Indian Air Force and the Russian Air Force. “The project report is ready in all respects. The IAF wants 45 of these aircraft (to replace the ageing Russian AN-32 transport fleet), while the Russians are looking for 60 or more,” N.R. Mohanty, chairman of the Bangalore-based HAL, told The Telegraph.

    “The design specifications are finalised. We are waiting for a firm commitment of 60-plus from the Russians before a formal launch. To make the project economically viable, we need orders of 100-plus aircraft,” the official added.

    Mohanty said the two companies had agreed to acquire the engine to power these multi-role transport aircraft from a third company to help them meet deadlines. “We will share our expertise in designing the aircraft, but will source the engine from elsewhere as we cannot spend much time on a new engine. We plan to achieve the first flight certification in six years from the date of a formal go-ahead by the two governments. They (the Russians) have sophisticated test facilities and that will help us work against deadlines,” he said.

    According to current estimates, the project would require a budget of $350 million to be shared by the two firms. Officials said HAL’s innovative design solutions in metal and composite materials and Irkutsk’s expertise in aircraft manufacturing would ensure a sturdy fuselage which would, at the same time, be lighter than in conventional aircraft and thus increase fuel efficiency.

    Irkutsk has a partnership with HAL for production of the twin-seater Sukhoi-30 MKIs and upgrading of 18 Su-30K fighters, originally delivered to the Indian Air Force by the Sukhoi Design Bureau, Moscow. “The Su-30 (MKI) production is on schedule. We will deliver two fighters to IAF this financial year,” Mohanty said.

    The HAL chairman said the company’s designers were also working on a light combat helicopter for the armed forces. “We expect the government to clear the project before the end of this financial year. The first prototype will fly within 26 months of the formal approval from the government. The IAF has shown interest but has not specified the requirement (in terms of number of helicopters),” he said.

    Construction and installation work was begun at the system installations: at the command post, Dunay-3 (chief designer V.P. Sosulnikov45) and the improved Dunay-3U (chief designer A.N. Musatov46) sector radars, and firing complexes; a technical base was created for preparing and maintaining the antiballistic missiles; and maximum use was made of circular roads, cable communications links, and part of the other structures of the S-25 system, which was efficient and helped reduce spending on the new weapon system.

    I will anticipate a question: Why did we not reject the A-35 system? By 1971, only four of the eight Dunay sector radars and eight of the 16 firing complexes had been built. The construction work at these installations was almost completely done, deliveries and installation of technological equipment were completed, and testing had begun. State testing under the direction of the first deputy commander in chief of the National Air Defense Forces, Colonel-General A.F. Shcheglov47, was conducted at the lead complex of the system, consisting of: the main command and computer center (in abbreviated form), one Dunay-3 radar, and three firing complexes. Testing confirmed the correctness of the scientific and technical decisions supporting the combat functioning of the new, complex, and completely automated system for destroying a single-warhead ballistic missile. The system could not work against ballistic missiles with multiple warheads. In this connection, the decision was made, supported by the military-industrial commission (VPK), to finish building the facilities already started: at the second Dunay-3U radar and at five firing complexes.

    When the minister asked if the Air Defense Forces were able to detect the launch of Pershing-2 missiles no later than 2-3 minutes after launch, A.I. Koldunov, always thoroughly prepared for such meetings, reported that this mission was partially being accomplished. The minister demanded an explanation from me, as an expert. I said that the Dunay-3U long-range detection radar from a separate ABM corps, oriented to the west, is capable of accomplishing this mission in this search sector covering the northern and central part of the FRG. The southern part of the FRG territory is not monitored by our assets at extremely low angles. D.F. Ustinov right then instructed the chief of the General Staff to assign the appropriate task to the scientific research institutes and design bureaus.

    Academician V.S. Semenkhin59 became involved in the work to solve the problem of detecting the Pershing-2 missiles, 27 of which were deployed in the southern part of the FRG. Several projects were developed, requiring much time and expenditures. As often happened during my time in the service, the solution came not from a scientific research institute or design bureau, but from the troops. A group of officers, innovative engineers–T.Ye. Kozhemyakin, A.A. Peresypkin, and V.A. Shelopin–under the direction of the deputy for technical affairs of the Dunay-3U sector radar, I.S. Lipatov, substantiated and submitted a proposal to modify the transceivers. Such a seemingly simple solution made it possible to expand the search sector and reliably cover the entire territory of the FRG.

    BrahMos, Akash, Trishul to be test fired soon

    INDIAN defence scientists will conduct advanced flight tests of at least three missiles — BrahMos, Akash and Trishul — by the end of 2004, in their intensified efforts to convince the users to go in for induction of these indigenously developed missiles.

    In the case of BrahMos, the supersonic cruise missile, its newer version of `Ground to Ground’, aimed at hitting land targets is slated to be test-fired in December, said Dr Prahlada, Project Director of the prestigious Indo-Russian joint initiative missile development programme.

    Early this month, the anti-ship (naval) version of BrahMos, completed trials when it successfully achieved mid-air manoeuvre and hit a decommissioned ship, off the Orissa coast. It is now ready for induction, Dr Prahlada told Business Line.

    The production facility for the missile is already in place and “we can deliver one missile every month. The Navy has expressed its Letter of Interest,” he said.

    The BrahMos missile has also attracted international interest at various defence expos in Singapore, Australia, Abu Dhabi and South Africa, where it was exhibited. However, a decision to export to any country has to be taken by the Indian Government, Dr Prahlada said.

    Given the accuracy and demonstrated capability of the BrahMos supersonic missile, which has a range up to 290 km and high speed, the induction by the Indian Navy could considerably boost its strike power and defences.
