Italy leased the F.3 trying to get commonality with IDS, it ended up with wasting a lot of money, still have to use F104s and then lease F16 waiting for the Typhoons.
The problem was that F3 is good to patrol large areas, if you need to scramble to intercept Yugoslavs or Libyan Migs (the threats at theat time) you better use your F104s.
So they would have been good for Australia and Canada but in case of need I guess you buy used F18 at 25% of a Tornado F3.
So I guess the scrapyard and some museum should be a good place for them
They sold 72 to Saudi but I thought they were not allowed to deduct those from the total number? Perhaps that has now changed? And even so, they still need to sell another 37. Perhaps Switzerland can get a very good price? It seems the UK would be desperate to get rid of the a/c. And I think Italy also want to sell some T1 planes.
Anyway, not good news for Eurofighter, but good news for countries that want to buy from the UK and can squeeze the brits really hard on the price :diablo:

Only problem if Germany would take all its 180, still EADS Germany got less work then BAE, that would make Miss Merkel quite upset.
I guess the AW149 – EH101 would be the best overall solutions, both types will be already in service and so you would not have to manage a 3rd type (maintenance, spares). Furthermore the AW149- EH101 would be built in the UK while I guess the AgustaWestland share of the NH90 is built in Italy.

Joint Strike Fighter: Strong Risk Management Essential as Program Enters Most Challenging Phase
I think that due to a series of condition the RAF in the next decade will have the second best (after USAF) equipment as for fighter bomber with Typhoon and F35 overlapping with Tornados.
I guess it never happened after 1950s
Funny thing is that Italy with lower number will be in the same position

…. not the more interesting news, but I was getting sick and tired of the rants on these forum

This is the way I see it.
F35 is too early to be evaluated…..
Then look at the post war history and at the fighters……
When RAF had Vampires and Meteors the US had P80s and the USSRs MiG9 and so at that time beside the numbers the odds were good.
Then there were Sabres and Mig15/17 and a little bit later the Hunter that was almost the same performance (look at the indian-pakistan conflicts) but in way inferior numbers….
….. Then came the Lightning and there were F104s, F106 and MiG 21s
…. the problem was at that point that US come up with F4, F15 and F16 , the Russians had MiG23, MiG25, Su15 and the RAF Lightning and some F4s….
and then came the Tornado F3 not a “Natural Born Fighter” that had to face F16 and F15 (just in exercise) as long as MiG29 and SU27.
So now we got the Typhoon that has show up a lot in all exercise, US got F22 but not a lot and Russia development of the Su27.
The RAF will never be that close to USAF and VVS as with the Typhoon

My suggestion goes on the Typhoon if we look at after 1945 airplanes, overall to the Spitfire.
Just look it at it during the cold war USSR and USA have sometimes (90%) better airplanes and in bigger numbers.
Now the Typhoons are better in a lot of aspects of the best russian fighters and the only superior fighter (F22) will be purchased in fewer numbers (always if the RAF got the full order).
Same for AMI, Luftwaffe and EdA, expect for the number.
For the UK and Germany (and possibly Spain and Italy), a better bet might be to persuade Japan to lift their ban on exporting military kit, and negotiate a deal – Typhoons for Japan, and Kawasaki C-X in exchange! Hey presto, the Typhoon consortium gets to sell dozens more Typhoons, and get a good transport aircraft in exchange!
In Italy we really have to be thankful to Mr. Antonio Martino (Defence Minister of the first Berlusconi Government who got Italy out of the A400M (after the Final Assembly Line was originally supposed to be in Italy)), for sure Italy needs 2-3 C17s but we do not have the money and the KC767 has been a fiasco as of today but at least 22 C130J (12 basic and 10 -30, with 6 configured as tankers) with the C27J have been reliable and have supported the deployments.
