Okay folks – here’s a translation from the newspapers:

A legend will become a luxury label !

Swiss Entrepreneur Alexander Triebold has acqured the trademark rights of the legendary British Spitfire Fighter aircraft !

Yesterday at Zurich Airport, news were unveiled what will become of the flying Legend “Spitfire”. Participant in the news-event was Spitfire BM597 that was flown to Zurich by Clifford Rodney Spink.

The aircraft from WW 2 tells of heroism, glory and honour – this shall lead to a new luxury label, which shall appear in form of Leather Jackets, Watches and Glasses; also planned are Perfumes, trousers and tweeds.

I only relate information here and I simply don’t know what to think about this.

Your opinions and insights are highly welcome.

    Martin

    Where will it stop?

    Lancaster Bath Soap?
    B-17 Room Fragrance?
    Wellington Boots? (sorry)

I find this rather distastefull and not a proper tribute to those who died in these machines.

Farnborough. Late 70’s. School trip. Tried to vault over a railing, Foot got stuck. Landed face down in muddy puddle, directly infront of large crowd of onlookers who almost wet themselves (even more than I was).

Just over a year ago I had the privilege of sharing the turret of NX611 for half an hour with a gentleman who’d occupied a similar spot 60 years before. I won’t forget the experiences he shared.

We all owe a great deal to Alec and his comrades. Rest in peace Alec.

One of the strongest memories I will retain about my trip in Just Jane was very similiar: standing behind an ex-Halifax Flight Engineer in the cockpit, and then listening to his stories over lunch. What impressed me the most was how he recalled his missions in a very straightforward way, as if they were little more than an afternoon’s pleasure flight!

I have subsequently met others – one chap in particular who flew dozens of missions, during and after WWII – was was very puzzled by all the attention and interest in what he saw as ‘just a job’. Maybe the years soften the memories, but these guys were extremely brave, regardless of how modestly they will recall their exploits.

I have just finished reading the Bomber Boys book, the accompanied the C4 series. There was almost nothing about what happened in the television series, but it was a rivetting read. I was almost shell shocked from reading about the loss of life when I finished it, but heartily recommend it to anyone.

I met a chap through work the other day, who did his national service in the 50’s, working on Lancs. He was on a team that took one Lanc per year out of storage and got it back to flying capability, ready for use by the Maritime Unit. They were used to drop life boats to ships in distress. I wonder if this was the unit he meant?

    Stirling cockpit

    David,

You are correct. Although the floor for my Halifax ….. project will be made of wood, the rest such as frames, stringers, skinning, brackets etc will all be done in aluminium and according to HP specs as much as I can. My friend who is making the Lanc cockpit is going ever further and wants absolute accuracy.

    Cheers

How is the Stirling coming along? Any new pictures?

and set up a little museum, which I visited a few years ago -However, there is an American LST (or half of it) which also has a lot of interesting history –
    Richard.

    Hi,

I visited the same museum when I was there in the 80’s.

Thanks for posting your site and the link to the German diving site.

It was not a mentioned wreck when I was there – some years ago now – as it would have been a prime diving site. Maybe it was by the beech in a more ‘inhospitable’ part of Gc. Headhunting was still a sport until only a few years ago……. 😮

Can’t remember at present: it is via Red Letter Days -a very late redemption from my 40th brithday!

They asked if I was over 15st (unfortunately so!), as a ‘different’ plane would be provided. Do they fly Herclues’ from Stapleford?!! 😀
