Unfortunately, most of us don’t get to hear Griffons at full throttle these days. I presume your Spit is blasting along after a V1 with the throttle through the gate? I ‘d say it must sound like a throaty howl or a throaty snarl. The nearest to a full power Griffon I’ve heard is a Shackleton taking off which was pretty awesome although with the Shackleton you got the throb of the contra-probs phasing in and out of sync superimposed over the exhaust note.

Plus the gentle tinkle of the crews fillings being shaken loose.

    Pre-BBMF @ EK

I hope to be at EK by 1 pm. I can offer a lift from NW London.

As there should be quite a few of us there before the BBMF visit, we should arrange to meet up. I suggest we all carry a rolled up copy of Flypast under one arm to recognise one another. We also need a password……. 😉

I had the luck of going to a summer ball in the officers mess at RAF Halton many years ago. This was an old Rothschild mansion, and playing in the ballroom was the swing section from the RAF band. They were terrific – played lots of Glen Miller stuff and I felt like it was 1940!

Not an aircraft museum, but if you haven’t been to the Montjuic Military Museum it’s well worth a visit. It’s in an old fort on top of the Montjuic hill which overlooks the city and the port. You can travel up via funicular and cable car and the view from the top is fantastic. And once you’re in the central courtyard you can sit in the open among the artillery pieces and enjoy a cold beer from the cafe. Magic.

If I recall, Mr W. spent a lot of time in the PRO at Kew. I guess we will only know for sure when they start digging – I hope they’re carefull! This is the url for the press release that RogerS sent me:

Well, it sounds as if Mr B. was wrong then. Shame, as this seems to be such a detailed work and it was certain in his record that the 1900lbers stayed at home. 🙁

Depends on when you are going, are you there during a weekend, or even better, give me the dates. Maybe I can give you some details then. The PAC is well worth a visit, they have some 20+ aircraft, with a Super Saeta (and a non flying Phantom) being the largest. However, it is situated within the airfield security aerea, so that’s a problem. On certain days during the month it is open however. BW Roger

    Thanks for that.

I arrive the morning of Saturday 5th March and will be free that afternoon and most of Sunday/Monday and going home on Tuesday.

Hmm, I’d love to do both as well, but EK is some way beyond Coninsby, according to my map. Roughly how long does it take to get from C to EK (and back)? (By car)

Is it worth taking the train? If so, can someone help me get from venue to venue?

I’m coming up from North London. ETA EK by 1pm.

The press release by the airforce is mentioning 4 1900 pond bombs, and the possible remains of 4 missing crewmembers. Three crewmwmbers, only 1 being identified were buried short after the crash. So, I am convinced the 4 big ones are there. BW Roger

It will be interesting to see what they find. According to my source 1900lb’ers were not used on that raid, but were on the raid of 28/29 to Nuremberg. Any chance of getting substantial bits of the Stirling out?

Roger, probably 2.000 pounders, and yes they are long and thin and the heaviest bomb that would fit the Stirling’s bombbay.

    Cees

According to Michael Bowyer’s Stirling Story, the Stirlings on that raid carried 30lb incendiaries, 1,000lb and 250lb HE. The fact that only 4 bombs were left suggests that some salvage has already been carried out?

Any photos or additional information/links would be gratefully recieved.
