Very interesting – thanks for the info.

Although Northwood/HMS Warrior is now a joint services establishment, it was originally RAF – it was Coastal Command HQ from 1939….
Oops…of course. But I always wondered why – if it was part of the RAF – was it ‘HMS’ – was it a naval base before that? (Northwood being renown for its long association with the sea……)

There’s a plastic Spitfire at Northolt already. Visible from the A40 in front of the Civil Terminal.
Yep, but not at Northwood HQ – although this is not an RAF base, and was HMS Warrior previously so should have a plastic ship outside (in the duck pond), therefore probably won’t qualify for a gate guard, but as I drive past daily it would be nice to see a Spitfire on my way to work 😀
Sorry for the off-topic blueredblue – I hope you enjoy your time in Uxbridge – good shopping, nice Odeon cinema in the shopping centre and good connections to central London but right on the edge of the countryside (well, what a Londoner like me considers as the countryside!)

Chris Wren still runs the Ops Room visits. Not been for a few years but some friends went only last month. The future of the Ops Room is secure but the rest of the base is going with most things having moved to Northolt. I’m hoping the Spitfire gate guardian might also move to the new entrance being made at Northolt at the moment.

Agreed – but if it is going spare my preference would be for outside Northwood HQ – my local 😀

Hmmm, multiple possiblities come to mind if this had worked – it would be a Hurribomber with a slightly increased bomb load, or a Blen-Hurr fighter-bomber.
Think of the further concepts – joining a Spitfire and a Lancaster would give you a fighter capable of getting to Berlin that was not a Mustang and you could get up and go for a pee.
How about an Anson on top of a Meteor? Maybe not.
Or a Wellington on top of a Defiant? At least it could shoot forwards.
Just call me Choy Radwick.
(Slow afternoon – I’ll get my coat).

Nice to see a good number of flypasts planned over Bentley Priory again.
I count myself lucky to live in between there, Northolt, Hendon and Rickmansworth – plenty to watch this year!

PS – like the new videos linked from the BBMF site to YouTube. How about some more updates on how the servicing is coming on?
Let’s go the whole ‘James May’ and make it out of platecene and Lego, then we can race it round Brooklands.

Looks like a fun place to be posted.
Why is it classed as a war grave if the crew are no longer in the wreckage and buried (?) nearby? Is it an ‘official’ grave or just treated as such by the locals out of respect?

Got it – Get NX611 airworthy then exchange PA474 for the Chinese Stirling. We will still have an airworthy Lanc in the UK so no one will be the least bit worried.
Sounds like this trading idea is catching on but will the Stirling be airworthy or just a heap of bits to form the basis of a project.Remember you saw it here first!
Chinese takeaway?
“One day son, all this wil be yours”.
“What…..the restoration?”

P7350 flown by Sqn Ldr Pinner his last trip as OC BBMF
Thanks, a very nice way to finish his stint as OC, I expect.

I thought this was geat! I sat through it with a smile on my face as I recalled all my old Airfix models (nowhere as nice as the one Mr May apparently had on his arm at Dx recently!).
The GateGuards team really came up trumps. The owner (and you may be reading this?) was obviously worried about it not working and him being embarrassed on TV (I can empathise with him on this!) but kudos to him and his team. They put in a huge effort and the programme would not have worked without them!
JM was obviously moved and a bit lost for words at the end – a real dream come true for him. And – as Toddington Ted said – his flight in the Grace Spitire produced the fantastic quote: “This is a Supermarine Spitfire and I have just flown it.”
Top Telly.

I wonder if we can pursuade Peter Jackson to do something simliar with a Lancaster?
It’s her box. She can have it any colour she likes.
I’m fed up with people nitpicking when an owner takes the time and trouble to preserve a classic box for all of us to enjoy and then somebody moans about the colour.
Moggy
There you go, my point entirely. According to “Bomber Command Boxes of the Second World War” – vol 72, Early Safeway green was standard on all home delivery to Germany until just before the Lancaster entered service. Afterwards it was a mixed of light Tesco blue on the sides and Morrison/Dark Earth on top. (Trolley markings were Standard Mk IV roundels).
If only he had consulted an expert.
(Yep, its a slow Friday :p)

And that box is the wrong shade of green.
