I was told this was the reason for the delay in returning the Battle to display after the damage by the transport contactors. The opportunity was being taken to introduce hanging points into the airframe so it could be hung and viewed from “a spiral staircase in a high building”
Oh gawd – Not another ill concieved landmark building with hanging airframes like the Millstones of Flight at Hendon or the Origami hangar at Cosford – you would have thought that they would have learnt by now – but perhaps someone hasn’t got their KBE yet.
No, please, no….the Cold War Museum at Cosford is a disgrace, a shameful waste of public money that turns aircraft exhibits into 1/1 scale Airfix kits. The damage has been done there, the money’s been poured away and that folly will probably outlast most of the members of this Forum.
For Hendon to go the same way would be an utter tragedy. Where’s the consultation in all this? This is the premier national collection for goodness sake! Let’s hope the parlous state of the public finances puts a stop to it.
Jeepman, you’re spot on with your reference to honours by the way. It’s all about vanity and big egos….
I have some Westland Whirlwind (helicopter!) fuel flow meters, 1960s vintage, in my shed.
Can some kind soul tell me if they are likely to be a problem?

It was still extant among the dismantled Hunter F.5 airframes lined up near the fatigue testing tanks at Farnborough in 1965; it stood out due to its duck egg green colour scheme.
I have a feeling, but stand to be corrected, that those Hunters were destroyed in ballistics testing at places like Foulness.
New Zealand would be a good place to look for Bristol Freighter spares, I would think.

This thread, along with the adjacent ones on the Napier Dagger and the Westland Wapiti, are by far the most interesting items to have appeared on this forum in a very long time.
Thank you to all the thread starters.

K5054NZ I believe you are right. Rather than having to pay for a CAA inspector to fly to New Zealand every couple of months or so to monitor progress, they elected to have the whole process carried out here in the UK.

Unfortunately , with the current management, acquisitions of any kind do not feature in RAFM’s list of priorities.

No idea, but you could try asking on PPrune Historic?
DD
Well, I’d like to know, where did they all go?

I still look in a couple of times a week, I really miss the old forum. Nothing has managed to replace it.

Thanks for posting ! Could you confirm whether that plate in the nose gear bay or the main undercarriage bay?
It would be great to see a picture of this Hunter if you have one.
Cheers

There is a photo of WS788 taken in 1960 on eBay, may be of interest.

Nice pictures, thanks for posting. Good to see the progress being made.

OK, I stand corrected. My edition of High Ground Wrecks, No.2, doesn’t mention a Fulmar in its listing of Dartmoor crashes.

Not wishing to muddy the water….. but large pieces of Battle K9391 were recovered from Dartmoor by a group from south Devon (DARRT?) many years ago, Is it possible that the Fairey’s were confused with the passage of time?
