    Mine 🙂

I probably paid a fair bit over the odds, but the bidding was tough and I had to have it 😀

I hope that you’ll be pleased with your purchase. Those old wartime mags are always interesting.

    Stirling conatruction diagrams

Stirling fans may like one of the articles in this wartime American magazine; possibly something for Whirlwind fans too.

I would say it was Henlow.

I went on ATC camp there in July 1965, and as Pagen says, there were a lot of aircraft gathered in store awaiting the opening of the RAF Museum. Among them were Lincoln RF398, which was parked outside the hangars like the one in shot, and Canberra B.2 WJ573, which was out to grass further out on the airfield. The Canberra was in the pale ‘PRU blue’ and grey colour scheme, and may be the one in the film. Also parked outside was Lancaster PA474, though this doesn’t appear in the film.

Another absolutely superb set, especially as the weather obviously wasn’t ideal.

    Thanks, yet again, for posting.

Perhaps the leg from 3190 was fitted to another 109 for some reason; swapping of components is not exactly unknown in British military aircraft, at least, and I would imagine the Luftwaffe would do the same.

An engraving of that size is also not easy to alter, and perhaps under wartime conditions no -one bothered.

    Just my thoughts

    Great pictures, thanks for posting.

It’s very dark in there, so sharing the steps taken to overcome this is very useful.

Whilst this site ,from the RCN Shearwater Museum, blames engine troubles for the Shark’s early replacement:

It looks like Mk6 XF386, which ended up on the Otterburn Ranges.

    Yes, Light Aircraft Grey, BS381C/627

BTW, does anyone know what was the first RAF trainer to wear this red/white/grey scheme? I’m thinking the Dominie as I can’t recall seeing a fluorescent marked example?

As far as I can remember, the first public airing of the new colours was on a Jet Provost at the Royal Review, on the RAF’s 50th Birthday at Abingdon in 1968. The first couple of Dominies did wear dayglo, though I think they were repainted before entering regular service.

I picked up a load of old issues of Control Column a while ago. In one of the issues dated 1973, Keith N Blaxhall wrote an article on Whitley AD698 which flew into the cliffs of Lundy island on 1 June 1942. Thanks to some help on the forum I tracked him down – incredibly, he still had some pieces from this aircraft, picked up way back in the 70’s and very kindly sent them to me. Thanks Keith!

There are two pipes from the coolant system and a segment of one of the lower longerons.

    Amazing what turns up.

I went looking for this when I was last on Lundy, way back in 1984. I couldn’t find anything, and was told that the whole area had been subject to collapse and erosion of the cliff face in the intervening forty years. I may go back next year, if I do I’ll certainly have another look.

Good luck with your project, a magnificent effort.

    Gents

The last pilot to fly XX467 was Brian Grant, when he flew the jet from Yeovilton to Perth, for Airwork.

    Freebird

    Freebird

Correct, but it was from Brawdy.:)

My twopennorth, and correct me if I’m wrong, but were there any large hangars at Manston at the time? There is what looks to be one, in the distance in that central picture of the Hastings in question.
