From the fact that it still has the blower housings on top of the nacelles, and the colour scheme, I’d guess that it had come direct from military use.
Just a guess mind you, I’m no DC-3 expert.

I remember going around St Eval church about 25 years ago, inside it had several memorials connected with the the airfield.
I have a recollection that the building had been severely shaken by a large explosion during the war and still had cracks in the walls.

😉
Imagine Mr Allen having a thing for Bomber Command, now that would be something with such a budget.

I visited the collection a few years back.
We were told Paul Allen’s collecting philosophy was based on whether or not he’d built a plastic kit of a particular type as a boy…as good a start as any I suppose.
So it really depends on whether the Airfix Lanc/Stirling/Halifax etc were available in the States at the time.

No complaints will be forthcoming, you can be sure of that.
Some great pictures, thank you for posting.

I have them the wrong way round
Wrongly, I made the assumption that the grey aircraft is WF791 as this was the scheme it flew in with the Vintage Pair
Have a look at the pictures on the following thread http://forums.airshows.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=1900&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a and the following comment
“Particularly interesting was WH4543 in camo before being droned and WF791 before joining the Vintage pair collection.”
So to answer the question it was 5 CAACU
No, you were right the first time around.
WL349 was resprayed in camo at Chivenor shortly before it was retired from flying, for reasons that I can’t recall; WF791 at Woodvale stayed in its grey and dayglo, despite its F.8 stablemates all being camouflaged.
Those are great pictures by the way.

I can never look at photos like these without thinking “how many of those poor baskets made it out of there”. I visited Changi Jail a short time ago.
John
I’ve never visited Changi Jail, but I was thinking exactly the same.
Their world was just about to be turned upside down.

Truly inspired.
Brilliant shots, so out of the ordinary.

Post ~1109
The dimensions given by the seller of the canopy correspond to those of the F-86 canopy exactly.
It’s off an F-86.
I’ll wager far more F-86’s were scrapped in the UK than Scimitars (think Scottish Aviation at Prestwick).
DD
Back to that canopy for sale in Post#1109…
I’d put money on it being from an F-86 .

Thank You.

Whilst everyone interested in this thorny subject is looking, could anyone offer an opinion as to the potential hazard posed by a Westland Whirlwind fuel flow meter, circa 1965, glass intact? (Currently housed in a drawer in my shed.)
Thanks

The TV documentary that I saw showed the Ark Royal hangar deck to be a Fairey Fulmar graveyard.
DD
I doubt that very much.
Far too many funerals, I’m afraid.

The background looks too hilly for Hurn.

Field Aircraft Services were at Tollerton from the early 40’s until 1957, according to Action Stations 2. They dealt with surplus Dakotas, including refurbishment for resale, as well as scrapping.
The photos look as if they were taken post-war.
