Thanks for posting those.
I went looking for it in the 80’s when passing through Limoges and was told that it had been scrapped, so it’s a pleasant surprise to see that it survives.

The last Lancaster formation 70 years ago? Three Lancs were flown for the Dambusters film, which was released in 1955.
…and the 1956 Battle of Britain display programme for Chivenor included a formation of three Lancasters from Coastal Command, St Mawgan. Still a long time ago!

Very best wishes for a full and speedy recovery

There should be a plate on the top of the fuselage decking immediately behind the cockpit, bearing what I guess would be the part number for the centre section. I’ve seen this plate on Sea Furies and a Tempest II.
That would be as good a candidate for a data plate as any, though linking it to a serial no. could be a problem.

Good evening. I think that it’s the fireproof plate used to identify wreckage should, heaven forbid, the worst happened.
I know that’s hardly necessary on an airliner, but it could be of more relevance on something smaller, and is required by the regulations.

The style of the code number ‘3-‘ looks similar to those carried by the Mk.16s at 3 CAACU Exeter, but was probably common to a number of second line units in the early fifties.
Central Gunnery School had Mk16s at Leconfield, which is close to Hull.

Oh, and Discendo Duces, to whom I thought I had replied..
Those meters are fine; I had about 75 of them in stock. No radium at all.

Thank you, that’s a relief to hear.

Indeed.
Mention of lots more wrecks in BC here:

Again, thank you.
The reason for my interest is that I have a shed drawer full of Westland Whirlwind helicopter fuel flow meters that I acquired as part of an auction job lot, and this thread had me wondering whether they constituted a hazard. As far as I can see the dials don’t glow in the dark!

Many thanks.

How old is ‘old’? When did they, if ever, stop using radium in British instruments?

Some of the ‘what’s in it for us’ comments on this thread make me feel ashamed to be British.
After Canada, perhaps it should go on tour, taking in Australia and New Zealand.

it does seem that a number of valuable posters on this forum have recently decided that enough is enough – to the detriment of us all
perhaps sometimes, just sometimes, it is necessary to engage the brain before the keyboard……………
Seconded, this Forum is all the poorer for it.

More interesting would be to know how this Spitfire, given as a symbol of wartime comradeship, came to be disposed of on the open market .

Adrian,
You have a PM.
