That was in the Christmas special of the previous series, shot at Elvington. They also used a Tiger Moth and a couple of Miles Hawks in that ep.
As a Supporting Artist on the series, I can confirm categorically that it was East Kirkby.
We were filming over three days (and some night shooting was done of course) and it was incredible to get the chance to be up close to the Mitchell, Mossie and the Auster, which taxied on camera, but never flew. The Lancaster ‘Just Jane’ remained in the hangar undergoing maintenance, but we got a good look around her too.
Everything set at ‘RAF Abingdon’, bar the Wing Commander’s Office, and of course the hospital, was shot on location at EK – it was amazing to see it come alive with a good many extras, all the vehicles (including a lovely Bedford owned by a friend of a friend), and set dressing.
I paid homage to my relative in the series, portraying a Sergeant Wireless Operator/Air Gunner, which was indescribably poignant and will be something I’ll never forget.
Here are some on-set images (hopefully)!
I did intend to post on the 12 O’ Clock High forum. but it seems they’ve closed registrations, which is a shame!
Thread bump!
Ok, for balance:
I think it’s unfair to judge a series based on a couple of clips in a teaser, or even main trailer, that are probably not at the resolution/technical specs they’ll be shown in on release.
I am sure you’re intelligent enough to know about relative speeds, perspective, etc; so to a crew sat in a bomber formation at constant speed, enemy aircraft might appear to be ‘screaming in at mach 5’ – a lot of those shots you mention are shown from the POV of the Fort crew and yes probably have been exaggerated to give a sense of that point of view, the suddenness of being attacked.
The comments about formations looking like wall paper with nothing moving are again a bit generalising – in constant formation flight, aircraft do seem to ‘hang in the air’ in position, you see that at times even in the documentary ‘The Cold Blue’.
At the end of the day, it’s a drama series, scripted by a very excellent writer, with some expert technical crew, and in the absence of enough B17s to create the 100th Bomb Group (especially with the cost/insurance implications), CGI is a viable alternative.
Whilst not perfect by any means (though I think many have the misapprehension it is, and expect as much!) It does offer the chance of an immersive experience, and ‘shooting’ shots that would be challenging in conventional filmmaking.
So sad to see the state of what were once taxiable airframes that wowed the crowds, just rotting slowly away.
Dr Felton is an interesting figure.
All I’d say is, his videos are for ‘entertainment’ purposes. A lot of what he presents are essentially read-aloud Wikipedia articles…
Probably just saw ‘TIGHAR’ and ‘recover Maid of Harlech’ and just bunged in a little publicity for the group with minimum research.
Looking at the helmet, I’m inclined to suggest it might be American as opposed to German! Any USAAF crashes in the area?
Yes it was made to look like one to match Black 6 (painted as Red 3) which was used for the flying scenes. Also explains the hint of desert scheme.

What an interesting mish-mash of parts! It looked alright for its brief moment before being exploded though!
I heard something to the effect of it having Jet Provost wings, I think t6flyer mentioned it in another thread somewhere.
I wonder if anyone has a copy of FP or AM that features the photographs/knows which editions included them?
Nearly two decades on, having just watched the Land Girls film (currently on Britbox) I recalled that someone had posted about the replica crashed Messerschmitt Bf109 used in the series.
Did anyone ever pinpoint the location/get photographs of it? I expect its long since been scrapped or fallen apart.
