If only they could sell Windsor Castle and the crown jewels and put the money towards a flyable Hornet!

Yes, but It’d probably end up getting sold abroad in the end once flyable. Britain can’t afford it xD

I see clearly now that I have offended people here and caused undue disruption and dissent.
I’m sorry for caring about Britain’s heritage and wishing that the earliest (and in my opinion onee of nicest) marks of Spitfire remains well represented in the skies that were her home.
I’m just waiting for an American* to buy Windsor Castle and have it shipped over, after all we have plenty of castles and palaces! then perhaps the crown jewels can join it, and the magna carta and all kinds of lovely things. Who gives a ha’penny about Britain’s heritage, it’s buyable.

*Of course my intention is not to single out the Americans solely, I must stress I have nothing against the Americans. A rich person from any other land could easily purchase whatever they fancied.

If it be desired I shall take my leave, but I stand by my love of seeing a fine aircraft in its ‘home skies’

Three of your four aircraft are owned by Americans. The other two could leave at any point.

Aye but that would be greedy 😉

Plenty of spitfires in the Uk and plenty more coming. Share some with the rest of the world 😉 And as said, it’s a free market. Highest bid was from the US. That’s the way it goes.

Ah yes, capitalism wins again, Huzzah!
But yeah, share and share alike I guess, still, breaking up a nice quartet of Mk 1s is a great shame.

It was disposed of at an auction that was open to all interested parties from across the world. The winning bidder is located in the USA. Any UK bidder with the resources could have outbid the offer but they didn’t. Tigers weren’t “traditionally” based in the UK or of any relevance to our native wildlife scene, but you can find plenty of them in the respective Zoos in this country. Where’s the difference… Firstly without the drive, finance and enthusiasm of Tom Kaplin and the late Simon Marsh it is unlikely either P9374 or N3200 would ever have been restored to fly. Secondly, Tom Kaplin very generously gave all the sale money to charity, a truly remarkable gesture. Be thankful that there are individuals out there that have the passion and means to indulge in such an expensive undertaking as restoring an old second World War fighter and then allowing such a priceless artifact to be flown and displayed for the delight of others.

What I ‘said’ may have been ‘said’ in a patriotic passion perhaps, and I agree with your eloquently put statement. Yes it was very generous to give 9374 extra time over here, and yes Kaplan and Marsh’s drive and finance was a Godsend in restoring two lovely Spitfires. Furthermore donating all the sale money to charity was an honourable gesture.
That said, we have ‘lost’ a remarkable aircraft from Britain’s skies, which may never return, effectively as though it never existed here.
Yes we have some fine pictures of it here that will be treasured, but you can’t beat the real sound and sight of Four Spitfire 1s flying in formation, which may never be seen or heard again.
Glad to see that everyone here is taking it so lightly, stiff upper lip and all that, what what.
She may be living, but here she is dead, no more to grace the skies above Britain.

It’s a great shame. As a Mark One it has very little relevance in the states unless it was with Eagle Squadron (which it wasn’t) It was never flown by an American, no offence intended of course.
The fact we may never see it in the skies above Britain again is tragic. Which plane will we lose next I wonder?

They certainly didn’t last year. I went there and to the BofB memorial at Capel-le-Ferne in April.
Before anyone starts an argument about the photography policy (as I recall seeing happening a few times) I didn’t find it an issue at all.

These sites may be of use:

RAF Harrowbeer (where I have visited) has a signal mortar base, shown on this site rather far down the page:

This page is about Beaulieu airfield in the New Forest. It has something similar to what the OP found but suggests it was a windsock mount/base:

Yes, but that was nearly 30 years ago.

…Time for a re-make? With Hawker Hurricanes this time…albeit with incorrect spinners as someone recently pointed out.

Saw this last night and I have to say, I was really looking forward to it. My view of it after watching however are mixed.

On the one hand the concept is fascinating and chilling (I will certainly read the book however the series goes) and it’s interesting to see how Britain might’ve been under Nazi rule.
The camera work was good and I think from a production standpoint it’s quite well shot.

However…aside from the dodgy CGI Mk IX and the use of a Mk IX in any case, I thought it was quite hard to make much of a connection with the main character Archer, partly because he does mumble quite a bit, but also because not much is shown of his background. Of course this may come to light as the series progresses. However for a first episode, not much was given away except he may or may not be a collaborator, he works fro the Met Police, he has a kid, his wife died and he likes talking to random women in restaurants. Oh and likes a good mumble xD
In contrast I did however think the chap who plays Dr Huth really got the ruthlessness that such a nasty Nazi requires, in fact I think he played the SS Officer Karl Strasser in Foyle’s war and I remember that was a chilling portrayal too.
I’m waiting for the resistance plot to really take off and the murder investigation to gather speed, but overall I don’t think the show is as awful as some make it out to be, especially the press.

One thing I have to say, I can’t believe they killed off ‘Air ace Helmut Wick’ after that fantastic display of flying between the buildings of London!

Something tells me that the Evergreen group has/had one of the DA Messerschmitts.

This site mentions 109s and Doug Arnold: http://yumodelclub.tripod.com/batajnica_air_show/a_tale_of_two_me109s.htm
