Hello Mike,
Thank you for the interesting reply.
If I compare your data to that given on Merlin III data plate I illustrated would I be looking at something very similar? Or is the Spitfire 1 now ruled out?
I have very little technical knowledge of engines etc and would appreciate any opinions!
Kind regards, Malcolm.
Andy,
More than you realise! I now know the difference between an engine and cockpit data plate!
Kind regards, Malcolm.
Andy / Pete,
Many thanks for your extremely interesting posts.
Kind regards, Malcolm.
Andy,
It would seem that the data on your plate is very similar. Do you know what aircraft your plate originated from?
Kind regards, Malcolm.
Hello Pete,
Engraved very small on the back of the plate is the following code:
D10812
Hope this helps!
Kind regards, Malcolm.
Nick:
Many thanks for the informative picture!
Ian:
That sounds like good news!
At a local auction on Friday there were two lots which contained Merlin engine data plates. The first lot had 3 plates for later marks of Merlin which I did not attempt to buy. The second contained the subject of this thread and another for the Griffon 61 and two cardboard labels. I bought this lot in the hope that the Merlin III plate ‘might’ be Battle related.
I have enclosed pictures of the other items in this lot for members interest.
I would like to say ‘thank you’ again to everyone who has helped with this question.
Kind regards, Malcolm.
Dave:
That would be very helpful and much appreciated.
Pete:
Once again, thank you for all your help – especially for taking the time to check your reference material. It was very kind of you.
Regards, Malcolm.
Hello Pete,
Thank you for the reply and kind offer to check your reference material. I have very little technical knowledge of engines etc, so you are dealing very much with a novice! Any help that might narrow down the type of machine would be of great help to me and very much appreciated.
Kind regards, Malcolm.
Hello Nick,
Thank you very much for the very helpful reply.
I note that my example contains virtually the same information except that the max rpm is 2850 to your 3000. Perhaps this might be an indication of the aircraft type?
Once again, many thanks for contributing in such a positive way.
Kind regards, Malcolm.
PS: Do other Forum members have examples of Merlin III data plates that they would share details of?
Hello Eddie/Smirky,
Thank you very much for the helpful replies. They are much appreciated.
I have looked at a few items of radio equipment but not found a similar control knob yet. Does anyone else have any further ideas?
Kind regards, Malcolm.
Merkle,
Think nothing of it.
Kind regards, Malcolm.
Hello Merkle,
I think I remember seeing a wing section at Flixton Aviation Museum recently.
Kind regards, Malcolm.
