Genuine question, but why?
The pilot is a link in the servicability and safe operation of the aircraft, he does the walk around checks and makes the decision as to whether the aircraft flys or remains on the ground for further maintenance
I acknowledged the pilot’s shortcomings but the fact the bang seat he was strapped to was years out of check meant he was doomed long before the impact. I’d always assumed Thunder City to have been a thoroughly professional organisation, with the skills, competence and money to operate these aircraft safely, that appears not to have been the case.
You couldn’t imagine a group like the LPG here operating in such a way.
I have no personal knowledge of how the LPG, or indeed, any of the various groups of amateur organisations keeping old aeroplanes running work, but I couldn’t help thinking there might be some parallels. I am in no way criticising the work, not to mention the sheer determination and enthusiasm of these people, many of whom frequent this forum but old, aeroplanes, old time expired parts, lack of experience on type or trade, lack of currency or recency from a maintenance perspective, lack of procedures and ineffective oversight by the organisation and the regulator killed a pilot. He, himself, appears to have bent a few rules and cut a few corners in the operation of the aircraft.
Could we see the same with a bunch of spectators at somewhere like Bruntingthorpe? The prospect fills me with dread and, for the first time, I have to agree with the UK CAA’s decision not to allow complex military airframes into the air.
As for the Thunder City accident, the pilots last words to his wife are chilling. Surely there’ll be criminal charges brought?
Graham Revill’s collection at Birlingham. Sadly they’ve been very slowly decaying for 20 years or more.
Will Stav./Glos. be the T6’s permanent home /base ???
Yes. Great to have a ‘warbird’ back. She joins the 3 Stearman and 5 Stampes.
Tiger are doing the reassembly but it will be privately operated.
The dead Centaurus in Memphis (whatever it’s provenance!) can be seen behind the Harley in this picture….

She looked and sounded beautiful today at a rather damp Throckmorton Air Display today
It was the Boultbee Spitfire, operating from Staverton for a display. Piccies on the Facebook page…

Incidentally, we relocated most of our stuff from storage to the Airport yesterday, including 3 crates of Typhoon ‘bits’.
Hopefully, the website will be up and running again tomorrow; we’re changing hosts.
Some pictures from our fundraising launch event yesterday. It was great to have four of our aircraft under cover together!

You have PM’s….
but not being born until 1975 I missed a great deal of classic aircraft and teams.
Old Fart? You need to change your user name!!:)
I remember the sea front Rothmans display by the leisure centre and another over the museum. Both would have been mid seventies and, I’m pretty sure were with the Pitts’. There was a single Hunter display at Old Leigh Regatta in either 1980 or 81.
