One of the potential issues for a buyer is that many of the structures were built at a time when the MOD had “Crown Immunity” when means that they didn’t have to comply with building or fire safety regulations. An example of this is at the Kelvedon Hatch bunker where they had to cut an extra fire escape exit though the top level of the bunker before it could be opened up to the public.

A friend of mine used to own RAF Skendleby, when he decided to sell it the estate agents were looking for “high six figures”, in reality it sold for £70k. These sites are so specific in their design that the cost to adapt it for other uses is massive hence they tend to worth far less than you might think.

The guns themselves (unless deactivated) are Section 5 firearms in the UK and as such would only be allowed with special permission from the Home Secretary (which he is never going to give!!).

I wondered why there was no mention of Babs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constance_Babington_Smith) as being the PI who spotted the V1 on the launch ramp?

how would they fly it out of East Kirkby anyway? It only has half a runway! Plus they would need some kind of air traffic control system in place. I can’t really see it happening to be honest.

Its an unlicenced stip at East Kirkby which means all you need to do is phone up before you fly to get permission to land and to make sure its open and there is nothing significant that you need to know. You call blind on their frequency before you land. You should talk to Conningsby on the radio while you are in the air as well.]

They currently have 3000 feet available.

From what I’ve been reading recently (on Pprune) I doesn’t appear that the Tiger Moth is an especially easy aircraft to fly (which is probably what made it such a good trainer).

Apparently in a multi engine airplane (such as an F14) with an inoperative engine, the centered ball is no longer the indicator of zero sideslip due to asymmetrical thrust. The yaw string is the only flight instrument that will directly tell the pilot the flight conditions for zero sideslip.

    So there you go 🙂

I popped in to see the collection on the friday before they closed down. I left at about 2.30 in the afternoon and I was the seventh person they had in that day. It couldn’t possibly have been a viable business based on those numbers.

I actually set out to visit MAM and spotted the Airbase signs as i was leaving. I like to think I’m fairly clued up on the airplane museum scene but I had no idea that the place existed prior to my visit to MAM!!

I’m glad that I managed to see it, infact I had a very nice gentleman give me a personal guided tour around most of the larger aircraft.

It was an interesting visit. I’ve been to the Midland Museum just up the road a number of times but never visited Airbase for some reason! I had a personal guide as well who showed me around the Nimrod, the Shackleton and the DC6.
Is the future of the Shackleton safe then (and the Nimrod come to that)?

I popped down to Airbase today for the first time. Apparently Sunday is their last day?
