Gatlings are only interesting for burst longer than 1.33 seconds or so (the light-barrel version a little less). The GSh-30-2 and the GAU-8/A deliver almost exactly the same amount of HE within the first half second. The GAU has somewhat flatter trajectory, but Gatlings tend to shoot all over the place like a drunk hoosier before it’s up to speed.

Okay. Then the Su-25’cannon could do almost the GAU-8’s job, right ?

I seem to remember than GSh has heavier and slower projectile…

So, it GSh could also have a weaker armor penetration capability. But is that much an issue ?

the Jaguar’s hot and high performance was an issue, at least in IAF service, where pilots always hoped for a more powerful engine, and there was a proposal to re-engine the IAF Jaguar fleet with a new Honeywell F-125 engine in place of the RR Adours. but, in its role as a CAS and tactical strike, it is a great strike fighter.

Ritht. This has been largely demonstrated, in various occasions, by AdlA’s Jaguar in Africa… Too bad India doesn’t produce it any more. A new purchased could have been useful…

GAU-8 is not superior to GSh-2-30, don’t let the size deceive you. It has a higher firing rate (4200 rounds per min) but needs 0,55 sec spool up time whereas the GSh fires up at maximum rate (3200, I guess) from zero. With typical short bursts of 10-15 projectiles on target, the GAU-8 delivers less kinetic energy per time unit than GSh-2-30. Not speaking about the general (in)accuracy of Gatling designs.

Interesting. How do the GAU-8 and GSh-2-30 compare in terms of projectiles weight and initial speed ? The GSh-2-30 fires the 30x165mm shell, while the GAU-8 uses the 30?173 mm round. How do they compare ? Just curious…

    Strange. Nobody mentioned the Jaguar…

A sturdy, reliable CAs/Strike aircraft that proved its reliability and efficiency more than once. Frankly I miss it…

BTW is it still under production in India or as the lines been closed ?

    Nice topic! 🙂

My choice goes to the A-10, of course, since it’s a perfect plane for current wars, like Afghanistan, and I would have loved to see the French Army (NOT Air force) get some along the Tiger helicopter. Note that I favor a twin-seated version that can also be used as a FAC aircraft. Also, some new, more powerful engines, would help…

Another favorite of mine is the OV-10 Bronco: a perfect twin engiened plane, well armed capable of various missions like COIN, transport/commandos airdropping/MEDEVAC, liaison, etc…

In the same vein, I also like the OV-1 Mohawk (despite its lack of transport capability), whose Licence had been bought by a French firm (Breguet ?) in the 60’s. And do not forget the Pucara, for the same reason…

I’m also sad to see that the exceptional S-3 Viking is not in service any more. It was a more than capable plane with many possible improvements and upgrades to go beyond its “mere” original ASW missions (ELINT/SIGINT, Tanker, Recon, Bomber ans, why not, an AWACS version…).

Ho! and I miss the Mirage IV in its strategic reconnaissance role… 🙁

Could 4 CdG-size reactors be a practical powerplant?

IMO; no. Twice more reactors, means twice more maintenance cost, twice more attention needed, thus twice more people to watch them. And people are another cost issue as far as modern warships are considered (that’s why the trend goes toward downsizing the crew)…

What info do you have on the A69 Avisos………….Sorry, I am not fimilar with the design.:(

It was a cheap small-sized vessel designed in the late 60s / early 70’s, for ASW duties to protect the French SSBN while leaving their port. 17 were built and 10 a still in service

They eventually proved very useful as high seas patrol vessels to monitor the French overseas territories and the 10 remaining are to be re-equipped as OPV despite being out of age…

Would be a great ship to replace the OHP Class in the USN. Which, could have been constructed in large numbers and cheap………..Unlike the LCS fiasco!:(

I was saying myself the same, about replacing the A69 Avisos.

    Plus it looks really Cool!!

A French design, and we don’t even buy it! Pah!! 😡

Can you explain this comment? I assume you meant the diverterless supersonic inlet.

DSI = “Défense & Sécurité Internationale”. It’s a (well done) monthly about defense & security questions…

Give me Chuck Norris and a Cessna.

    I win.

Chuck Norris doesn’t fly a Cessna, he just goes into the sky and the Cessna follows!! 😀
