There seems to be a glut and redundancy of new European short-medium range SAM missiles:

And What about SSM missiles ? Why not Exocet VL or Brimstone VL ? 😎

I am not leaving anything out out of dislike (except the french FREMMs) just for ease.

What’s wrong with the FREMM ? Genuine question…

which plane actually took over its place after its retirement?

The Rafale in its F3 standard is expected to replace the Mirage IV for nuclear deterrence mission in 2010. It will carry the ASMP-A missile, an improved version of the ASMP.

The Rafale F3 will also parform reco missions wirh a new recon Pod, but most of the strategic reconnaissance is planed to be performaed by drones Male/Hale (if any such program manages to go somewhere…)

Nice thread and nice idea to revive it. 🙂

    Two things:

    Rafale – (supersonic) 3x1150L (330-gallon) or (subsonic) 3x2000L (525-gallon), and 2x1150L (330-gallon) CFT’s

1-I believe that the Rafale’s supersonic tanks are 1250 litres-capable.

2-It would be interesting to also compare it to the aircraft’s internal fuel capacity…

Is it really safe to hang a bomb like that under the Huey’s center line?

For the poor guys staying on the ground, surely not… 😀

I like the AMX. I think it’s a underestimated aircraft, I simply have two complains/questions aboout it:

-I have often heard that the Spey engine had been the source of many troubles, would a remplacement by a more modern engine (like the SNECMA M-88) be an advantage ? And would this operation be possible ?

-I believe that, had the AMX been supersonic-capable it would have been a neat successor for the F-5 Tiger II or other “light fighters” (Mig-21…) Am I right or wrong to assume that ?

I think that M88-3 datas are bogus since the eco core will have the same diameter than current M88-2 or am I mistaken ?

Yup! I’m asking myself the same question… Any answer about it, please ? Other than “that other guy is wrong”, if possible, thank you…

    Splendid Work, planeman!

A minor note about the possible SVTOL configuration for a Mistral class vessel. I had been told that such operation was not possible for some reason related to the ship’s basic architecture… But I don’t know much more about it…

the M51 is an all composite missile , with a range between 8000 km to 20000 km , depending on the number of warhead it carries.

Huh ? I know the M-51’s actual range is highly classified and that 8000 km is a minimum (a French navy officer hinted before me that it could be more around 9000-10000 km), but aren’t you somewhat optimistic with 20000 km ?? 😮

Just remembered this thread! Anyone got any more pics? P-3 maybe? Non-western aircraft with AIM-9’s?

Nope. But I remember having seen an Atlantic patrol aircraft with a Magic missile under its wing… 😎

I could write more but this is the Rafale thread 🙂

Well… You can open a “Gripen News” thread. I’d be most interested in knowing more about that aircraft. Especially with the current development of the new version… 😎

About the Avisos: a recent new from the “Mer et Marine” website (which I recommend for its excellent work) states thats the 10 remaining Avisos would be reclassed as Patrol craft, with most of theit “heavy” equipment (sonar, exocets missiles..etc) removed, to replace the P400s…

That’s a stop-gap but no better solution seems to have been found…

At least they have good high seas navigation’s capabilities…

Note: as a personnal point of view, I really like the Rolls-Royce UT designs and think they would fit most of the job…
