    Summary for non french-speakers:

-An agreement has been signed today (tuesday 15th january) between France and Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), for a permanent French naval base in this country ( around 400-500 persons)…

-Another agreement of cooperation in civilian nuclear technology has also been signed, it is spoken of selling 2 EPR reactors. It’s the third agreement of this kind, after Algeria an Libya…

I have my doubts if those pics are genuine or not. But in the case it proved to be true, how much fuel would carry those CFTs ?

After all, they don’t look that large…

Still, I love the pictures, really.

The problem is that the AGS is the only 155mm naval mounting available. Monarc is dead, there is no longer any realistic chance of a 155mm gun based on the Mk8 and OTOBreda is concentrating on marketing 64 calibre versions of the 127mm LW.

The sad truth is that I think it wouldn’t be that difficult to navalize the 155 GCT‘s turret, it wouldn’t even be necessary to pierce through the deck, since all the system is located within the turret alone…

They would actually be very useful for naval interdiction missions, e.g. the anti-piracy and counter-terror operations in the Horn of Africa.

You are, in fact, re-inventing of the French Navy’s Aviso colonial concept, used to well… monitor its colonial empire.
It’s basically a small sized vessel (2600 tonnes full load, between a corvette and a Frigate) with a very long range and autonomy (13000 nm), able to sail up large rivers (small draught/draft) and to carry a full Marines company.
They also had a sufficient firepower to support tha aforementioned marines (3x138mm guns, with high RoF) , a limited cargo bay for small transport missions and they could carry naval mines…

1- the defence budget will not be cut, but priorities are going to change. I wouldn’t be surprised if transport planes and helo were put in the top priorities

2- the plan seems to order these helos in 2012 with deliveries starting in 2017… not really a crash program

Well… the “change in priorities” is very likely to see a cut in the number of FREMM frigates, for example, but I think you (and matt) are right in linking this choice to the problems/delays encoutered by the A-400M.
This reduces (well “negates”) the possibility of troop transport/projection and therefore requires a replacement, probably by increasing the sealift capabilities…

So here’s another question: isn’t the Mi-26 too big to operate from a mistral-class vessel ? And can it be navalized t all ?

Normally I would like to believe, that Eurocopter and Mil (=Euromil) will build a modern
    version of the Mil Mi-26.

Out of curiosity, what is the current statut of Euromil ? Still in existence ? I haven’t heard of its activities for years…

France has also introduced Russian laser guided artillery shells (in 155mm) into service

    Yes. The Krasnopol system.

About the Helos: I say “sweet dreams”, since the govt is considering “new” (but I wonder what’s “new”, here) cut in the french defence budget… 😡

    Sad. I would have loved to see Mi-26s in ALAT’s service… 🙁

Merlock: Mate that’s a great site, I read a few more of the articles and they are talking about another Mistral being bought to replace Jd’A, which when it retires will be 46 years old. Jd’A has had a marvelous career and provided sterling service to the MN. She’s a facinating ship and worthy of being preserved.

Hi! Indeed it’s a great site, it’s in fact my main reference about anything related to Sea & Navies (both civilian and military). Since we are in august, it is slowed down until september, but otherwise you will find fresh news every day…

So, I’m glad you appreciate it, and I highly recommend it. 🙂
