Another perfectly good thread down the crapper.

Lets have a big round of applause for all those who have worked so hard to make this happen.

Then, let’s try to save the day: I heard that Pakistan intends to by about 150 JF-17, but what aircraft are they supposed to replace ? I assume those are the various mirages III and 5 currently in service within the PAF, am I right ?

a refueling pod is to be designed.

I didn’t know that. How many extra fuel will it be able to carry ?

And speaking of fuel capacity: What is the statut of the CFTs program ? Stalled ? Still going on ? Cancelled ? They have/should have had an extra 1150 litres capacity each, right ?

Well I was thinking about the tanker role.
But then you need a refuelling pod on the centerline which is probably lighter than a fuel tank.
A Rafale in such a configuration makes for a nice tanker.

Good point! And for what I know, some Rafale-Ms have been used as “buddy-buddy” tankers for the Super-Etendards operating over Afghanistan…

From that angle,it looks like single engine F-5EII… 😀

    I think that’s the idea… 😉

Re: the article Mirage3000 posted……… So, how popular is Royal?

A lot (way to much, IMHO), she is amoung the most serious contenders for the presidential race…

Didnt the French have the same idea when they axed the 2-seat Raf on the CdG?

Mostly, the 2-seat Rafale (or “Rafale BN” or “BM” if memory serves) has been cancelled because it added not that much in terms of combat capabilities and it was crew-consuming (a problem within a ship were place is always a tricky matter)…

No, actually not. The latest reports on http://www.meretmarine.com indicate that the CdeG can effectively operate just 24 Rafales.

According to the DSI magazine, The 20-25 Rafale aircraft is the average CdG’s airgroup.
In the beginning of the CdG’s trials, the vessel was still claimed to be abble to carry “up to” 32 rafales. Both statements are, IMHO, consistent…

Remember, that by this time, both the rafale’s and CdG’s dimensions were established (and actually existing), since then the CdG’s has not shrinked in size, nor the Rafale enlarged…

A 21st century Tornado would look like the TSR.2: 5 meters longer, (small) internal weapons bay and ECM, large fuel capacity, delta wing with high wing loading and conventional tail. Pitot intakes and TF afterburners.

Schorsch, I would love to see such aircraft produced, I’d even accept a raise in taxes to fund it…

Whats the point of having smaller deck elevators on the RN version? Wouldn’t the larger elevator be a benefit if the carrier is reconfigured in the future.

Agreed, especielly if one considers the aircraft tend to grow bigger over time…

And picking the same elevators than the French’s, could be another good way to save money, couldn’t it ?

About the ADV: it is sad that the Active Sky Flash missile never entered service, I bet this “fire and forget” missile could have really improved the Tornado’s Air defence capabilities…

i don’t know where you get the idea from that the Tornado is a short takeoff and landing aircraft from, its far from that.

For short landing, at least, it has a reverse thrust system…

About the fuel issue, my own books tell me the internal capacities are:

    IDS: 5814 litres
    ADV: 7114 litrres

    Hope that helps… 🙂

My two cents: With all the due respect for the nationals whose air forces bought the beast, I find those fuel capacities somewhat “weak” for a twin engined aircraft, I’d have asked for somethig like 40% to 50% more… 😮

Apart from that I really dig the plane, ‘coz it’s a really neat “bombs truck”… 🙂

@PhantomII: I asked the question one another French forum, to know if the SUE’s inboard points are wired for AAM, like the Magic or Sidewinder, the answer is apparently no…
