does this indicate a french radar ? at the time, radar able to guide Super-530 would have been
– Cyrano IV (Mirage F1C-200)
– RDM (first batch of Mirage 2000)
– RDI (second batch)
I don’t konw, and I ponder it was not decided at this time. But remember that in 1990, the mirage 2000-5 and the RDY radar were on preparation, and maybe the RDY radar could have been chosen, giving the Novi avion the possibility to use the Mica missile…
Just my two cents…
Note, that I really have a soft spot for the Novi Avion, it’s a shame that it will never be… 🙁

DODGE SUPER 8 HEMI SPECIFICATIONS
I think to remember that the Eurofighter was solely designed as a pure fighter or interceptor, and that a2G abilities were added only later and responsible for an increase of empty weight from around 9,5 tonnes to 11 tonnes, due to the need to strengthen the airframe for that role…
But if you say, there is “nothing wrong with the aircraft”, then okay, okay…

Argentina still has Mirage III’s and Neshers and at least the Neshers have been upgraded and are now called Finger.
Really ?? I didn’t know that ? And what is exactly the upgrade that justifies a new denomination ? Genuine question…
And, excuse me but, I think that “Finger” is barely an appropriate name for a combat aircraft, just my opinion…

FORD VEGA HISTORY
It’s not boring because it has wingtip missiles rails, a single vertical fin, a single engine, and carries one crew member…….traits shared by a certain other Western fighter that your feelings are quite well known about……is it? 🙂
A fighter with wingtip missiles rails, cannot be boring! Period. 😀
About the f-1, I used to talk to a french pilot who explained me how damn good it was at his job (Reco), but also that it was a more than decent strike aircraft and a very stable platform for gunfire and bomb dropping…
For an aircraft designed as an interceptor, it’s a nice tribute paid to Dassault’s designers, I think…

I think the a Mirage 4000 / 2000 fleet would have made a more complementary one 😉
No kidding ? But wasn’t it the Pupose ? 😀
But note, that with no Mirage-4000 I’d have taken the Flanker for the AdlA… 😉
…love the ‘camo’
Yes! It rocks! And I think the ‘camo’ is a twin-seated airplane. I suppose it’s home-made by the guy, and I think the result is damn good!
…judging by the front-view, i’m not sure if it would have been flown because of downward wings?! would needed a lot of computer software for aerodymanics, i guess…
The downward wings are… disturbing, right, but Maybe is it a flaw in the kit’s making, instead of design ?
Anyway I want to fly this bird for the “Lock-on'” video game! 😀

What’s the advantage of a second crewmember in the RF-4?
A second pair of eyes, maybe ?
Despite all the “kewl tech” stuff used in reco, the pilot’s eyes are still one of the best sensor for a recon aircraft. Havingt a second pair is surely a “plus”.
Now, I keep thinking tha the F-1 has a strong edge in terms of size and “stealth”. Plus, with its small wing aera it is a well comfortable aircraft for low or very-low level flights.

…some years ago I read a very interesting article in the spanish magazine “avion revue” where the future of the Spanish Navy aerial component was analised in depth,…it basically proposed the idea of The Air Force and The Navy sharing a common jetfighter and the carriers as “floating airbases”, operating together,…it could be possible and the savings in public money of this formula appeared to be great,…but, politically and practically,…very difficult.
That’s interesting. Some years ago, It was proposed that the French air force (NOT Navy) could buy tho Carrier-capable Rafales to support and reinforce the Navy. After all, the “Joint” operation is still the motto, right ?
It seems, however, that the Navey refused to have it’s rafales “stolen” by the Air force and the idea was forgotten…

ahhh… the ’80s were the best of times (before the Soviet Collapse)…
Apart from the 30,000 nuclear warheads and 50,000 soviet tanks ready to crosse NATO’s border (or what I though by this time), you’re right! 😀
remember those old artist’s impressions from the Fulcrums & Flankers? man, i used to imagine how they’d stacked up against the Western types, even though they’d say that they were less superior. who can remember those?
I remember when the Fulcrum was displayey ? Paris Air Show Le bourget in 1989. After the demo flight, the french air force officers didn’t say any more that they were less superior, they mostly said something like “oh ****!!! 😮 “.
A French general, even said about the Flanker “I buy it! And right now!!”…
He! He! He! Good’ol’times… :diablo:
i found the Flanker very big and brawny with it’s big circular intakes similar to the F/A-18, except bigger?
Yes, most of those artist’s impressions were mostly wrong, especially when the Flanket was concerned. I still remember the various aviation magazines publishing the “scoop” of the real pictures of the flanker taken by a norwegian aircraft…

“Mig-37 Ferret”
Wow, that cast long memories back! 🙂
Back in 1989, a loooong time ago, with some friends, we tried to figure that out with the help of the old Italery model kit (I still have it unfinished somewhere…)…
We supposed that this plane had similar weight/dimensions than the M-29 Fulcrum, and probably similar engines and range. But since the Italery model kit had apparently no radar, we though it was some kind of strike fighter with secondary ATA abilities, not unlike the Jaguar (or more accurately the F-19 we were “flying” at this time, using microprose’s video game)…
We though it had afterburners too (by this time we didn’t know about the F-117’s afterburnerless aspect), and a speed of about mach 1,8. We also expected some kind of 2D vector thrust…
It had a long central underbelly bay, separated in two parts with each part able to carry a 500lbs LGB or a twin AA-8 Aphid missile launcher (by this time we didn’t know about the AA-11 Archer).
We also decided it could carry underwing ordnance in the same fashion than the Fulcrum. We were already aware that stealth required to carry no underwing ordnance, though we considered that stealth was not ALWAYS necessary, and sometimes firepower was better (we though that underwing pylons could have been jettisoned in case of need for more stealth)…
We were somewhat naive, weren’t we ?

That?s the funny part of the ship. It seems it was a ship without a mission!
That’s probably the main flaw… 😀
The leiv motiv of the CVV was to get two carriers for the cost of a single Nimitz unit. So, it was designed based purely on economics, not performance. I think that the main mission would have been naval presence, with an airwing consisting of A-7?s and later F/A-18?s.
Thinking seriously, my personal opinion is that, if properly designed, it would have been a fairy good unit, well suited to 21?st century regional conflicts.
It’s is not a bad idea, and it could even have worked in a situation of, say, “emergency” (like a war and the need for mass production). But otherwise, I understand that the US Navy kept its bigger carriers…
Another customer could have been a mid-sized european navy, had a european country understood the need for such aircraft (and there’s not a lot of them…).

Good morning, Vietnam.
I?ve just found in Secretprojects forum a carrier design from de Carter administration. It is obviously much larger than the SBAC220, but, don?t you find it familiar? It would seem that NAVANTIA (ex IZAR, ex BAZAN) downsized this carrier project to create its SBAC series.
You will find more info in that forum.May the beer be with you…
Nice picture, thanks for posting it, but what was this carrier’s role supposed to be ? Escort carrier ? Light carrier ? What characteristics ?

This ship should have cost 400 million dollars but that is 10 years ago. Today probably double the price.
800 millions $ ? That make arounf 650 millions euros. That’s not THAT expensive for a 27 000 tonnes aircraft carrier. It’s one third of the PA2’s planned price, after all, and I am know dreaming of seeing many medium-to-small sized european navies purchasing such a design…
I have doubts about Hawkeye – remember the trubble CdG had.
I have the same doubts, the CdG is the “low limit size” fot Hawk eye, so i think the drawing of Hawkeye on this ship is somewhat optimitic…
Well I hope this information helps in the discussion
Yes, a lot. Thank you! 🙂
As a sidenote: would it be possible to build a Tarawa class-like vessel (40,000 tonnes, with the troop capacity) with the same 75 metres catapults and arrestors ? Just wondering…
