Yep. “Well hell if the UK buys the Rafale over the Typhoon why shouldn’t we?”

That’s the very reason France never bought the F/A-18 Hornet to replace its Crusaders: “Well hell if the French buy the F/A-18 over the Mirage 2000 why shouldn’t we?”.

No matter that they existed no other immediate alternative.

Result ? We kept a Vietnam-aera plane until year 2000 or so, just to protect “national pride” and private (I mean Dassault’s) interests.

I hope for the UK they won’t act as stupidely…

I have a book called “Modern Fighting Helicopters” by Bill Gunstan and it talks about helo a2a tactics. Of real interest to me is the Soviet Scissor move. Do you guys know of it?

Yes. I have its French translation. A very good book, but somewhat dated, now…

cause a Rafale buy wouldn’t happen ever

    But, hell, WHY ???

Is the Rafale so plague-strickenn that a Brit doesn’t want to get closer from it without a ten feet pole, or what ???

The hundred years war is over, you know ?

I think the French have two of the wisest words in their national pride: Libert? and ?galit?.

Liberty to speak out and say what’s on your mind.

Equallity to hear the critisism that comes back.

    Indeed.

That’s why we also added “Fraternit?”. It includes a form of behaviour that implies to avoid to **** people off with the two previous words’ possible consequences… 😉

The odds are the FAA/RAF will get the JSF in one form or another………..

Very probably, yes. But I was considering the “what if”, no matter how unlikely it is…

Unless the JSF fails and that seems extremely unlikely. The Rafale doesn’t have a chance……………..To bad India didn’t buy a couple squadrons for its ADS Carriers.

If there’s no JSF, nor Rafale, then what’s left for the FAA ? The F-18 E/F ? If the FAA buys The Super Hornet, what will the RAF do ? stick to the EF-2000, anyway ?

How many Vulcans airframes are still in a flyable (with some WD40) state?

I think the answer is : none. Too hold. Too many hours of flight, too tired airframes, too costly to enhance their operationnal life.

And seriously: if UK wants true strategic bombers, why not use the “privilegied partnership” with the USA to ask for a handfull of B-2s, just like they already got a handfull of C-17s ?

Expensive ? Yes. But cost effective too.

Other fantasy: on 1st apeil 2005 the french magazin Air&Cosmos published an excellent “april’s fool joke” buy “revealing” the project of a strategic transport/bomber version of the Airbus A-380. It sounded so cool, that I almost believed it, or at least I wanted to believe it! Well…

I think we are derailling the thread. We were talking about the Rafale, weren’t we ? Then it turned political and I somehow mentionned the Mirage 4000… et voil?!

    I admit I share a responsibility in that… 🙁

Could we switch back to Rafale (or at least aircrafs) questions, please ?

And in english, for that matter…

Two-seater Mirage 4000? I have something for you!
Once upon a time in Internet was “the whatif modeler forum”. (Don’t try to find that on google, it had been hacked recently by a ******* bull**** , so virus will infect your computer.)
I registered on this forum and meet a nice guy name Pollux Delta Seven. We talk a bit about Mirage 4000 and this guy had made profile of a two seater Mirage 4000.
This is the two seat nuclear strike Mirage 4000 by Pollux Delta Seven…

    Wow! Nice! 🙂

But this aircraft, as previously stated, could only be used as a bomber: not enough sight for a training airplane.

Since a twin seated aiframe wouls have been designed anyway as a training plane, and since it would have been too expensive to design a second twin-seated, I think it’s safer to assume that a twin seater bomber version would have been developped from the training version, like the 2000-B turned into the 2000-N.

So, I think a “4000-B” would have had a cockpit similar (if not identical) to the 2000 B ou N…

But the illustration is still good! nice work! 😉

    [Out of topic]
As a sidenote, I’d seriously have LOVEd to see our AdlA operate Mirages 4000 N (then 4000 D) instead of 2000N or 2000D, despite all their qualities… And I still consider the Mirage 4000 is the worst missed opportunity of the last three decades for the AdlA… 😡

Wow a ‘Hatred’ minister! That sounds cool… 😀

“‘Hatred’ minister, the coolest government’s role since 1984”. :diablo:

Speaking of twin-seaters: I regret there was never a twin seater version of the Mirage 4000. I’d be curious to know how it would have looked.
Have some artists view existed for that project ? I’d be curious to watch them…

This one is “Histoire V?cue”, released in 1998.

Thanks! I’ll try to find it, if possible…

I met Pierre Clostermann in 1997 at Strasbourg, he was on his own in the terminal waiting for a commercial flight.

He was in Strasbourg in 1997, and I was not aware of it ????? 😮

But I AM from Strasbourg! I moved to Toulouse only in 2002!!!! And I missed that!!! 😡

Stupid question: Could a “Harrier III”, re-use a configuration similar to the Yak 141’s ? A twin-tail, and the rear of the Pegasus engine being modified with an afterburner ? Why not ? 😉

Do, you won’t regret it. I read it as a schoolboy and re-read it last year, it has lost none of its power.

The man was a hero, more than that he was entirely human. He will be missed.

    Yes! I read it when I was… what ? 11 ? 12 ? I still have vivid memories from it! I never re-read it as an adult, but I think I will very soon…
