The book you mention Colin may be “Appuis-Feu sur L’Oued Halla?l” (…), his experience as a reconnaissance pilot during Algiers war, flying the Broussard, and wrote as a kind of a romance.

2 or 3 years ago he also released another book about modern combat pilots’ stories. Including one about the Falkland war, where there is a controversial story about how argentian A-4s would actually have severely damaged the “Invincible” carrier (this story has never been very clear, in fact, both sides claiming very different versions of what happened).

I haven’t bought it, having no money in this time, and now that I have money I can’t find it any more, nor remember the title or publisher… does somebody know that book ?

    I learned it this morning…

šŸ™ I’m sad. Very sad. He was a great man. And his book, “The great show” has been the book that helped to trigger my love for aviation…

    RIP Pierre…

Hm – looks much better than the ugly Atlantiques… šŸ˜Ž

What’s wrong with the Atlantique’s look ? Atlantiques and orion are, after all, very similar in lines and design…

Merlock: I know that Leduc 022 flew šŸ™‚ (as 010 and 021). Better to say: French designers probably like bizare concepts and some of them reached prototype stage…)

Agreed! And the Delanne’s designs can only confirm this pointof view! šŸ˜‰

About some designs posted on this thread, I must say I have sometimes a bit of trouble to figure the direction they are supposed to fly to… šŸ˜€

I think it’s because they want to go for a conventional carrier, instead of a nuclear one like the CdG.

    Nic

But I doubt it would be THAT complex to put a conventional propulsion on the CdG… right ?

However the CdG is SMALL, only 40.000 tonnes while the Brits are looking for a 55.000 to 60.000 tonnes carrier. And sincerly I can’t help but agreeing with them, I always though the French Navy had a real tendancy to design “skimpy” ships in order to save a few money…

This attitude leads to build ships that are later simply too small to be upgraded with ease…. remember the Lafayettes ?

westland P12 looks like Lysander plane with rear fuselage from lancaster bomber.

Nope! As I said it’s the Delanne’s “tandem wings” concept that seems to have been tested for the Lysander…

Each EU-member has a limited budget controlled by some national bureaucrats. If those are much better than those in another country is questionable at least. Such multinational institution can set up in a EU country elected from the participants. Such was done with good success many times before. I remember about the European space activities, Ariane, Galileo a.s.o. Out of range for most European-countries to do it alone.
The Netherlands alone will never have the money to develop stealth technology, despite capable heads there. None will throw money in without a true chance of success or customers for that in the end. If Europe is in need of 3+ different MBTs, FFs or SSs to be competitive on the world market becomes more and more questionable. Participants on such products will get the expertise related to that and a fair production-share related to the procured numbers including exports. Those members are “shareholders” too to some degree.

But, Sure! I agree with that! And I was also agreeing with what Aurel was saying: “it only finances administration instead of research.”

I’m afraid that a “common fund” won’t be capable of being efficient. In your case you expect that this fund will be efficient. I don’t.

But otherwise, I agree that ACTUALLY putting workable capacities in common is a good move…

And I like well the idea of a “sharholders” concept…
