..just like every other country since the end of Cold War.

Just like every other european countries since the end of Cold War, and France is exactly in the same situation than UK, for that matter…. On the contrary, most contries in the world, especially in Asia and the Middle east have actually increased their defense budget…

Personal message to the Dassault PR who read us: for me Istres better than Mont de Marsan please: it’s more convenient to get there :D)

    *Ha-hem…* (clear throat)

Well… From Strasbourg, where I live, it’s not convenient to go to Istres nor Mont de Marsan, but for a ride in a Rafale I’ll do the journey, whatever…

    Hope it’ll work… 😉

Well… considering the HDMS Absalon’s size and firepower, I’m not against qualifying it as a destroyer…

Scroll down and you’ll see the specs for the OPV90.

    Many thanks! 🙂

Yes, that’s it, a Fassmer design built by Chile first, and now Argentina and Colombia also. It’s sensors are probably fairly basic, but even so, they seem to be able to produce ships very cheaply down there. (I think that Chilean shipyard is also building a new Coastguard vessel for Iceland.)

That’s interesting, I heard there also is a slightly larger (90 m long) version of the Piloto Pardo class on the drawing boards, but I can’t find any data on it.

Do somebody knows where I could find some ? Thank you. 😎

@Flanker30, is that the Piloto Pardo class ?

Because, I just found this link (in Spanish), according to whom France would be in negociations to purchase a certain number of them. Fact or fiction ? I hadn’t heard of it before… 😮

Not that I complain, though, this vessel looks damn good at this job! 😎

Logically if the Rafale was in “degraded” mode the likelihood is that the “opposition” were in a similar state.

I’m not saying that as a absolute fact, just objectively analysing the scenario as presented to us.

    Maybe. Or maybe not.

It has been clearly stated that the Rafale was in “degraded” mode, but nothing in any way has been said about the Typhoon.

If it seems “logical” to pretend that the opposition were in a similar state, but it has not been claimed.
Meanwhile, if the Typhoon had been in degraded mode too, then why has it not been said ? At a minimum this would have helped the Typhoon’s PR to minimize the stated results.

Well I assumed that Russia can track launch position and target. Simply seeing a single launch shouldn’t be enough to set them off.

I cross my fingers, but I wouldn’t bet my life (and my country’s life) on it. People and governements tend to do very unreasonable things whenever nukes are concerned, to say nothing of the case when nukes are actually flying…

Not sure the French 100mm compact will see any additional use in new ships.

I’m not even sure this turret is still produced… 🙁

Then, an almost unarmed semi-civilian transport ship becomes a “technologically advanced battleship” ? Am I supposed to laugh or to cry before such statement ? 😮

The Jaguar was a good program and a example of cooperation between France and the UK.

That’s not the way the Brits seem to perceive it. In many english books from the 80’s I read (the first one I can remember being from Bill Gunston), it is often stated shat the Jaguar has insufficient performances as compared to [name a US aircraft] and was chosen only “for political reasons” ou “to please the French government”… I swear I have read those sentences…

The Uk purchasing anything French ?

Here’s the Telegraph’s answer. I think, that’s pretty clear for any Frenchman, around there…

it was the first time a warship had intervened after pirates boarded a vessel.

Excuse me, but I’m under the impression that, during the past two years, French special forces have intervened at least twice after pirates had boarded a vessel and taken hostages…

    *EDIT*

Yes! The Ponant (2008) and the Tanit (2009).
